Subject: Slot-A Athlon overclocking woe's
OS: Win2k pro
CPU/Ram: Athlon 850mhz 256mb PC133
Comment:

System Rundown
Win2k
Classic Athlon Slot A @ 850mhz (NEW, only a few weeks of CPU time on it)
Dual fan cooling/heat sink
Tyan Trinity S2380 (Award v1.02 BIOS) (CPU Clock speed setting 200mhz (100mhz DDR)) (Supports up to 2.05 CPU volts)
256mb PC133
Western Digital HD (6GB)
Generic NIC
Sound Blaster Live ! Value
NVidia TNT2 4xAGP 32MB RAM
Anatect TruPower 330w NEW power supply

The primary issue I am having is getting the voltage to set correctly.
No matter what voltage I chose it always ends up being set @ at least .5 volts
higher than I specified. My mobo has auto volt detects via jumpers (which can be changed)
When I set my mobo to 1.75 and the TD2 to 1.75 I still end up @ .5 volts
higher than specified. At the default CPU speed (850mhz) my core volts is
1.76 (er so) and this is the only volts I can get the system to boot stably
at, which means I have only been able to overclock by 50mhz (!). At higher
mhz & volts I get various symptoms as follows :

POST > Memory countdown > drive detection > load bios > save changes > reboot > BIOS CHECKSUM ERROR
^^^In bios I am changing nothing todo with volts as it is not supported, only options that I have)
^^^been using ie (agp apature size, no drive A, drive boot order etc...)
POST > CHECKSUM BIOS Error (then attempts to read drive A)
POST > Memory countdown > drive detection > 1st windows loading screen halts with last 4bars remaining
POST > Memory countdown > drive detection > NTLDR not found
POST > Memory countdown > drive detection > Drive read error
POST > Memory countdown > drive detection > Invalid partition (or something to this effect)
POST > Memory countdown > drive detection > Windows Blue screen KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED
POST > Memory countdown > drive detection > Windows Blue screen IRQ error (not less or equal to or something)
POST > Memory countdown > drive detection > load bios > sys freezes in bios
POST > Memory countdown > halt

Theses symptoms are not consistant, where as it may POST > memory countdown > drive detection > load bios
after the reboot from exiting bios I may get a BIOS CHECKSUM error or halt after memory countdown etc...

I experience none of these issues when it is overclocked by 50mhz or @ default speed @1.76volts (default).

Could this be a L2 cache issue ? Any help/advice would be appreciated as none of the websites ive visited have been much assistance.

well does ur motherboard support overclocking??? you can try to update your bios via manuafactor web site and see if the problem goes away..the thing is your processor probably cna't handle the stress, that's why it keep crashing..

If you check overclocking websites that use "GFD's" (gold finger devices) to overclock slot a amd chips you will see they all get gains from 20%-40% where as I am unable to gain more than 5%. People with amd 550 and 600 are able to overclock to faster speeds than I am.

I wish I could edit my post so i wouldnt have to keep adding info. My mobo supports speeds up to 1GHZ and up to 2.05 CPU core volts, so it is not that I have reach the limit of the mobo.
