Subject: Silly CPU question OS: XP (and RedHat 9.0) CPU/Ram: Pentium M 1.5 GHz
|
Comment: Hi, sorry if this is a silly question but i have a samsung x10 latop with a 1.5G Pentium M. I tried to check the speed it runs and my si-sandra software reports around 600 MHz and in RH linux i get 548 MHz. Should these values be so low? I'm completely new to this and i cant work out if my system is my slower than it should be or if I've misunderstood somthing. Thanks

Reply: (edit)your cpu uses SpeedStep technology which automatically detects how much cpu power is needed and then adjusts the cpu speed and voltage (and therefore power usage) downward in order to preserve battery life when full power is not needed. http://www.tomshardware.com/mobile/20030418/ibmt40-06.html

Reply: (edit)I meant in my simple english, is comps/electronics your bread and butter or just passion? how is it that you seem to have convincing answers anytime on this forum? where do you get your info from? where do you do your "home work", how do you update yourself... (and find patience to type it all out LOL ) and yes...are you from planet earth? LOLs and pls, see what prevents me from running a P3 @ its rated speed on a friend's board. (from the other thread) this is the second time I have started a thread and still no replies... :(

Reply: (edit)My degree is in electrical engineering and physics and I worked for years in computer hardware but not any more. Way back in college I studied under one the the founders of the transistor who could take hours to describe what happens in the 1/20th of a second between you hitting a switch and an electrical device turning on. He said he was the last of his kind because as things got more complex (this was before personal computers) it would take days to describe what happens in a device, and he encouraged us to master the details but learn to translate it in a few sentences in broad terms rather than on the electron level that he did. Then when I was a salesman I found that customers got a kick out of becoming able to explain complex things in simple terms to others (probably because it made them feel like an expert, such as being the only guy at the party with a concise answer to "wtf is a chipset?"), so I have always tried to help people become able to do that.

Reply: (edit)I too have tried to offer help, but don't really understand what Kailias is asking. P3 550 is running 100mhz FSB whether slot 1 or 370 socket. Unless you have jumpers on the board to set multiplier, the FSB should be auto detected by the CPU at default. Unless Johnoh gets paid for answering every question, if not I don't care how and what the person offering help or not to others must explain the reason behind his/her motive. I agree with Johon may be 80% of the time, whether he answers or not is entirely up to him. This is getting rediculous.

Reply: (edit)"Unless Johnoh gets paid for answering every question, if not I don't care how and what the person offering help or not to others must explain the reason behind his/her motive." hey guys, I was just curious. Thats it, just curious. If thats a "ridiculous crime" according to real_cool, then am out of words at this moment. as regards to johnoh, if he found my honest curiosity offending, then am mighty sorry. I thought I was in safe waters with that..oops!! The P3 in question here is a Slot 1 processor. The bios did recognise the processor as 100 X 5.5 (=550), but then the comp was highly unstable after that. I had to progressively underclock (reduce FSB) till the CPU speed came down to 450 Mhz. Regards, -Kailas.

Reply: (edit)"...he encouraged us to master the details but learn to translate it in a few sentences in broad terms rather than on the electron level that he did." When your neighbor needs the firing order of his Chevy, just hand him a piece of paper. It's not necessary to go into the theory of why only 4 firing orders are possible with a V8 engine. Educated is great; practical is even better.

Reply: (edit)A V4 engine is just as powerful as a V8 engine when the V4 engine got tuned up. I know the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution come with 2.0L V4 engine, it has 271hp and 273lb/ft of torque, that's just as powerful as a regular V8 engine. =D

Reply: (edit)Trying to make the point that my neighbor doesn't give a $h!t about anything but where to put the plug wires. That is practical. The discussion about "why only 4 firing orders are possible on a V8 engine" can be addressed drinking a beer after the Chevy is running. I'd be happy to discuss V4 vs V8 power with you on an off-topic forum or the racetrack. Skip

Reply: (edit)OT but there is no way that a 4 cylinder will ever produce the same amount of torque as an 8, only milk and juice come in 2 litres. BTW, where is this forum you talk about skip, wouldn't mind adding my 2 cents to an automotive forum.

Reply: (edit)I dunno...pick one of the NHRA or NASCAR sites. Since the race car is sold, the Giants still suck, and the 49'ers don't look much better I think I'll just have a beer and a shot. Ahh, much better. I honestly don't know of a good car forum, but something of the Computing.Net quality must exist. I'm mainly a drag racer but also have an interest in short track round de round. What are you guys into? Skip

Reply: (edit)Firstly, sorry softy, but we seem to have taken over your thread. I'm mainly into street cars, but Drag Racing does appeal to me. I know of a few car forums in Australia, but none with the same quality as this place. Unless of course the webmaster of computing.net decides to set up a general chat forum. BTW, Bathurst is on this weekend, don't know if you can get it in the states, but its fast and damn spectacular in the wet, well worth watching IMHO.
