what can i do to quiet down this cpu fan of mine. i had a aftermarket cooler on my cpu and it was loud so i took it off and put my stock one on. its still loud. if i were to take off this smaller fast fan and put a larger one on that spins slower, would it cool the cpu properly? cuz that would be much quieter.
this is a amd 1700 by the way. and its only running for downloading purposes and internet use only, nothing straining.
also, what other alternative do i have to quieting this thing other than this.
thanx

I have a stock AMD HSF on my XP 2000 that I overclocked to a 2600. Even at this speed it is still quiet. Do you have any other case fans?

It might work, it all depends on the temps coming from the CPU because as far as I am aware, the hotter it is the faster the fan runs. If you could get the temp reading of your CPU (from bios or m/b utility program) that would help alot.

Try buying a decent heatsink and some decent thermal grease. See if that helps?

I hate to state the obvious, but the fan makes all the noise...not the heatsink nor the cpu.

Ya can buy a "quiet fan" (usually advertised as < 26dB or so), buy a fan controller, or do what I did. I soldered a 47ohm resistor in the power wire to the fan to slow it down from 5400 rpm to about 3000rpm.

The slowdown solution worked for me but the reduced airflow might allow higher temps than you want. I did this to a PIII667 running a retail hsf from an amd 2800+...your 1700+ might not like a solution like this.

Post back your current idle temps and we can offer a better answer...

hah, yeah i know the heatsink and cpu dont make noise. what i think im gonna do is...take the PSU fan and replace it with a Vantec SF8025L fan thats supposed to be 21dBa. then ill get a Arctic Cooling Slim Silent Pro TC for Socket 462 thats supposed to run 12db to 27...you think theres a way to keep it at 12db(1400)? or is it gonna increase speed by itself. this is all at svc.com. what do ya think?

Just take it off and leave it off. Totally quiet.
