Hi Guys
Just after a little help. I have built my
Media Centre and i have got to upgrade the
CPU on it. I use an AMD 939 socket. Should
i upgrade to a Single core Fast CPU or a
Dual core slower cpu? Which is appropriate
for a media Centre also for playing HD over
a network?Many Thanks in Advance
Chris

S939 duals are growing scarce (& expensive) but there seems to be plenty of cheap single cores available. Which CPU do you have now?

Currently got a 939 3000 cpu (1,8ghz), quite
slow really, especially with Vista Media
Centre and HD videos. I dont mind paying
more money to get a Dual Core 939 but only if
it would be of more use than a single core
faster 939 cpu.Chris

So you don't mind paying at least 225+ dollars for an outdated S939 Athlon 64 X2 4200+ or higher? The high cost doesn't justify the performance especially when you are looking at the same performance with as an AM2 Athlon 64 X2 4200+ that runs less then 50 bucks now. For as much as the S939 Athlon 64 X2 4200+ cost you can build a Intel system with an Intel E5200 dual core processor, 2gb of DDR2 ram with a G31 motherboard and it will still be 5 dollars cheaper then one Athlon 64 X2 4200+.
You are much better off getting an S939 Athlon 64 4000+ for less then 40 bucks on a lot of websites.
If it's broke, then blow that sucka up!

"Which is appropriate

-Upgrade to a dual-core CPU (X2 3800 will suffice)
-Install a videocard with hardware AVC/VC1 decoding.Or, if you're a cheapskate with a good motherboard, you could try overclocking that 3000 till it does play 1080p. :P
My HTPC is powered by a Pentium M, which can do just as much work per gigahertz as an AMD64 can. At 2.82GHz, it's strong enough to play 25mbps 1080p AVC--with the nVidia hardware acceleration disabled--using the CoreAVC video codec running under Vista MCE. You might be able to do the same if you overclock your CPU.
I know that jam has (or once had) his 3000+ running at 2.75GHz. At that speed, you might not need to upgrade the CPU or videocard.

I'm running it at 2.5GHz (10 x 250MHz) now. I had it at 2.7Ghz (9 x 300MHz) for a short time but since it's being used in the "family PC", I wanted to be sure it was stable. My CPU is a S754 Venice though - default speed is 2.0GHz.

dual, always dual...i would never by a single, dual multi task so much better and when working with video you want the extra multitasking power.
