Comment: Hey, my CPU is way too hot... I took off my fan, and cleaned it out, maybe I have it going the wrong direction....Should the cpu fan blow air on heatsink/cpu or suck air off it? BTW, i already have thermal paste on.. Thanks- Zack

Reply: (edit)The fan should suck air down onto the heatsink. What sort of temps are you getting? I don't suffer from insanity, I embrace it.

Reply: (edit)its soo hot i can't touch the heatsink..and I can't get to the bios, cuz it'll restart before it... I am a computer expert...in most areas...but I never paid attention to the fan direction...I also have 8 fans in my case... 2 sucking in in front, 2 blowing out from back, 1 fan on top panel... blowing out, 1 fan in side, near cpu, sucking in, and 2 in the PSU, blowing out...

Reply: (edit)The fan on the heatsink should blow downwards, toward the heatsink. If you have all those fans & your CPU is still hot, you've obviously done something wrong. Maybe the heatsink isn't properly seated on the core (installed the heatsink 180 degrees off?)...or you used too much or too little paste. If you used a pad, maybe you forgot to peel off the protective plastic film?

Reply: (edit)Dell is extracting air from the heatsink, Alpha heatsink does the same way; the new Kamakaze also. The rest of the world, blowing onto the heatsink. Extracting heat (blowing out) of the heatsink has it's merit, with which the heat is extracted out of the case easier via the exhaust fan. Blowing onto the heatsink allows some cooling to onboard heat sources, i.e. capacity, memeory and NB. Like Jam said you'd probably install the heatsink incorrectly or lack of or too much thermal paste.
