Hey, i was wondering if there is a way to manually set the CPU fan speed on my motherboard. (Asus P5W DH Dlx; 1101 Bios)
Currently, my CPU automatically controls the fan speeds and I want it to be maxed out all the time. The stupid thing won't go to max RPM until the temps reach 70*C+. Thanks in advanced.Asus P5W DH Dlx

There's probably a BIOS setting for it, but 70C is awfully high. The temps I've seen for the Core 2 Duo are usually MUCH lower. Either your temps are being reported incorrectly or your HSF isn't seated well on the CPU.

No its just cause my C2D is clocked to 3.78GHz @ 1.55v and I'm using crappy air cooling... (zalman CNPS9500 AT; maybe a disordered one?) I heard that the CNPS9500 is suppose to be good, but unfortunately, it sux. This maybe off topic, but any suggestions for really good cooling unit? Perhaps THE best CPU cooler? (I Don't care about noise levels as long as the heatsink doesn't reach over 800g)

I'm all for overclocking, but I think it's stupid to have a CPU teetering at it's limit. 70C is higher than most temps I've seen for O/C'd Conroes, which is why I mentioned temp reporting error or improper HSF installation. If the reading is correct, it's very possible that your CPU is throttling. Where are you getting the temp reading from?
Personally, I would backoff somewhat on the O/C. Try lowering the FSB to say 400MHz & then tighten up on your RAM timings. You'll never miss the 180MHz plus it will give you a little breathing room. And are you sure 1.55v is necessary?
I suggest you check out this thread & pay attention to the info provided by Deeko:

If you are an extreme overclocker hoping to push the CPU beyond maintream limits, you should be prepared also to go the extra mile with your air cooling package.
Also your 1.55v doesn't seem unusually high to me considering you are sitting @ 3.78GHz - an overclock of almost 1400MHz! Eitherway, your E6600's built-in thermal throttle mechanism isn't actuated until you hit 85°C AFAIK, and depending on a couple things, you may be fretting over nothing.
The first being why you want the HSF to run at full tilt all the time, when the CPU isn't buckling even at 70°C or is there something happening that you aren't disclosing?
Also the 70°C that you reported is that with the CPU (@ 3.78GHz) idling or at load?
Anyhow, my advice to you if you are uncomfortable with the numbers, is to get a better HSF like the Freezer Pro from Arctic Cooling.

I am in no way an expert on the Conroe, but according to the info provided by "Deeko":
"the thermal diode (analogue) Tcase temp reaches 61C then we will experience thermal throttling, and with the entirely seperate digital thermal reading on each of the cores we will experience thermal throttling when it reaches 80-85C as is shown in TAT/Coretemp"
So I guess it would depend on where this 70C reading is coming from?

Well i remounted my heatsink like 4 times and even used Artic Silver... Maybe I have a dead heatpipe on my cooler. Also, Im getting my temps from Asus Probe. 70*C+ Is on LOAD; if it was idle, i'd probably would have blown my CPU by now ;)
I can go up to 3.91GHz, but I get lots of sudden shutdowns (i think due to thermal) cause my temps reach 80*C+ :O on load. (hehe, its almost like boiling water) The artic cooler is a really good and cheap cooler, but I hate it for a few reasons: The fan sux, and it isn't good at cooling on load temps. (From experience with my freezer 64 pro)Any other suggestions or should i go water?

Asus PC Probe is notorious for being inaccurate. Check the temp readings in the BIOS to see if they're the same.
Many sites that I've come across recommend using Intel's Thermal Analysis Tool (TAT):

lol, core temp SUX! (no offense) It reports my t-junction temp at a static 85*C and the temps for my CPU various every millisecond...

Uh, what's wrong with that? The TjunctionMax for your CPU is 85C...it's fixed & doesn't change. But the CPU temp readings update approx 30 times per sec, so of course they will vary a little.

Since the 70°C figure is under load scenarios, I wouldn't that much about it.
Just make sure your case airflow is configured for maximum efficiency and you clean out accumulated gunk periodically.

lol, i have a thermaltake VA8000BWS so airflow aint a prob... I'm thinking about getting watercooling sooner or later, but I have to get the aluminum version of my current case. Mine is wayy too heavy right now... (16.2KG with NOTHING inside the case!!!) Its made of.. steel and is a full tower case... lol
