Semprons are amd's competion to intel's celeron cpu. Yes they are the replacment for durons but no they are not better than the xp models.

The semprons run a 256k L2 cache while your barton is 512K so stick with XP barton over sempron.

The socket A Sempron is basically just a relabelled Athlon XP TBred that runs at 333FSB. For example, if you look at the specs for a Sempron 2400+...it runs at 1667mhz (10 x 166mhz). It shares the same clock speed as the Athlon XP 2000+ which also runs at 1667mhz (12.5 x 133mhz).

There's also a socket 754 Sempron based on the Athlon64, but it's stripped of the 64-bit capability & has only 256k L2 cache.

jam didn't they strip out half of the L1 cache from what was on the AthloXP? I believe that somewhat cripples this chip.

"didn't they strip out half of the L1 cache from what was on the AthloXP?"

From what I've read, it is a "pure" Athlon XP. If you didn't check the links above, here's a couple of clips from the Tom's Hardware article:

"AthlonXP becomes Sempron without any changes..."

"As the Sempron birth is nothing else than a simple renaming of AthlonXP, the consequences for customers and motherboard makers are small. If you don't mind your motherboard displaying AthlonXP at boot time, you don't even require a BIOS update."

The Sempron 3000+ (2000mhz @ 12 x 166mhz) actually has 512k L2, so it's based on the Barton Core...roughly equivalent to a 2700+? Check this CPU-Z pic:

The Sempron also appears to have tremendous overclocking abilities. It also appears to have the ability to run with a lot of XP's.

This may be blasphemy but when I went from a morgan core Duron 1300 to an XP 2400+, the performance increase was minimal.

Read all the links above and take your best shot.

My personal opinion is to save for a nice A64 rig and never look back.
