Hello,
I have a MSI mobo KM266 chipset and the manual says support for athlon/duron CPUs. I put in a friend's Sempron 2400. and it ran. ran with no problem expcept for it running underclocked understandably.BUT: on my friend's machine (he won the sempron in a college competition) the CPU simply refuses to run. When i put it in and started the comp it acted funny and then hung. After a couple of times it refused to boot. I thought i had coasted it but then when I put it on my machine it works and works fine!
am wondering whats happening...Now if this CPU works on my mobo then would a 745 A64 work too? I know am asking for the moon, am just curious.

Its a MSI board but a much much later version than mine. also from the sheer features its has. Also its been bought a few months after i bought mine.
its a via chipset but not sure which one, let me ask him and post back, but am sure as sure can be its newer than mine.

The Sempron you have is socket A...the A64 you mentioned is socket 754 - they are not compatible.
The 2400+ Sempron is nothing more than a 2000+ Athlon XP Tbred, reprogrammed to run at 10 x 166MHz, rather than 12.5 x 133Mhz. AMD gave it a higher PR rating because the higher FSB means it will outperform the XP 2000+.
My guess is the the 2400+ ran at 1.33GHz (10 x 133MHz) on your KM266 board.
If your friends board is older than yours, it may not support XP Tbred CPUs (Model 8)...it may only support XP Palomino CPUs (Model 6), or possibly only Athlon Tbird CPUs (Model 4).
indigian's suggestion about a BIOS update should be looked into.....

Kailas,
Sorry, I read the post over quickly I didn't realize it from you.
Hey, when you gonna splurge & buy some paste for that 2000+? If it's that hard to get where you are, I'll mail ya a tube...LOL! Did you use paste when you tested this Sempron?

1. I knew the sempron will anyway run underclocked, so did not worry abt the heat sink. Yes, it did run at 1.33GHz (10X133).
2. I could easily run it at 1.5GHz upping the FSB to 150.
3. My friend's mobo is a later version am sure. MSI with via chipset, support for 8x vcard, agp voltage and overclock, etc etc etc... he bought it a few months after i got my setup.
4. The label on the CPU says nothing abt which socket type. It looks dead similar to the athlon.

I dont know if you have reso;ved the problem, but In some instance I have noted that at even 266Mhz the Semprons wont work right. I had this problem myself when i upgraded from a 1.6 Duron to the Sempron, my board refused to read the CPU even though it ran at 266Mhz and Supported the T-Bred Core. You might need to look into a new board with 333Mhz or 400Mhz FSB, trust me its worth it anyway. Also did you try the Bios update.
