Comment: I wonder why we haven't heard of a Sempron 64 bit processor from AMD. The reason I asked is because Celeron D's will be 64 bit starting in the 1Q of this year and AMD as far as I know isn't producing a Sempron 64 bit processor this year and that processor will be the only 32 bit processor in production. Now there has been no "offical" word from AMD that they aren't going to make a 64 bit Sempron in 2005 but all of the tech sites are saying their is no signs of a 64bit Sempron to be made in 2005.

Reply: (edit)As far as I know the actual Sempron is based in the Athlon XP which is a 32bit CPU. I'm sure the 64bit Sempron based on the Athlon64 will come sooner or later but I don't know a date!

Reply: (edit) I think the sempron 3100+ is based on the 64bit core, but has had the extensions disabled so it only runs as a 32bit chip, and it has half the L2 cache. Apparently it is quite a fast budget chip, and a good overclocker. Zee. AMD Athlon 2800+ barton @ 12.5 X 176 : 2200mhz 512Mb Corsair RAM MSI KT6 Delta mobo Leadtek AGP 6600 gt 128Mb 120Gb Seagate HDD

Reply: (edit)AMD will probably do that @ some point, right now from a business perspective it makes more sense to move the last of the K7 batches of bartons and co....cough....cough Semprons and maybe even turn in some decent profit doing it. Eventually the demand for the above will wane as more and more people convert to the K8 939 platform, this is not bad for AMD since they can move some (754) 3100+ Semprons between now and then for people looking to build inexpensive K8 systems. Most likely by the time K8 (939) becomes mainstream the 64bit cpus that fail quality control for the tested speeds might end rebadged as the 64bit Semprons unless they come up with some other nomenclature.

Reply: (edit)Zeemon got it right. There are Semprons based on the A64 core, but they're 32-bit w/less L2 cache. If you read the article at Tom's Hardware a while back, they stated that the Sempron will take over the role of the Duron as AMD's value CPU, just as the Celeron is Intel's value CPU. Even the names are similar..SempRON & CeleRON. My guess is that's not a coincidence. Maybe in the future there'll be Sempron64's, but probably not until the Athlon128 comes out...lol Asus A7N8X-X 1800+ @ 8 x 210MHz 512MB PC3200 Asus Ti4200 128MB WinME/WinXP Pro

Reply: (edit)Actually, it comes from the latin word SEMPER, which means "always". Ever hear of the phrase used by the US Marines - "Semper Fi, do or die"? That's short for "semper fidelis" which means, always faithful. Asus A7N8X-X 1800+ @ 8 x 210MHz 512MB PC3200 Asus Ti4200 128MB WinME/WinXP Pro
