Hi there shipmates,
I have read loads but I am still confused …..
Help needed to O/C my Sempron 3400+ purchased recently from Dabs, installed on Gigabyte M8VM800MAE mobo Rev 1
Just upgraded from 3000+ , system is stable, crisp, and more eager to perform. benchhmark says 2009MHz and I wonder if there is much more under bonnet ?
If so what can be reasonably achieved ???
and what bios settings need be adjusted ???
Setup includes:
Mobo:- Gigabyte M8VM800MAE Rev 1
CPU:- AMD Sempron 3400+, 256kb, L2 Cache (2.0GHz)
Memory:- 2x 1024mb Crucial unbuffered DIMM PC3200
Additiional case fan fitted.
PSU wattage ?????
Bios Settings:- Award v6.0PG
K8 CPU Clock ratio -DEFAULT. The other options being x5 ~ x10. in steps of 1.
Auto Detect PCI Clock - Enabled.
CPU Host Clock (200MHz) Control - Disabled. (range 200~455 when enabled)
Speed Spectrum Value - Enabled.
AGP Overvoltage Control - Auto.

"Gigabyte M8VM800MAE Rev 1"

That doesn't appear to be a Gigabyte model number...unless you entered it wrong? They always start with a "GA-" & as far as I know, none of the start with an "M" after the dash. Your model number is probably GA-K8VM800M-AE which would mean the board is based on the VIA K8VM800 chipset.

I googled the model number you listed & came up empty, so I droped the "AE" & got a few hits for M8VM800M, but they were all non-English sites. Are you from Europe? I just had a look at the Gigabyte website & they list a few K8VM800 boards, but none of them end in "-AE".

Does your board look like this one:

I just noticed that you're probably asking about an Acer Aspire T135, so this is an OEM board. More than likely, it has a crippled BIOS that does not allow overclocking.

My guess is your old CPU was a 3100+, not a 3000+. Upgrading to another Sempron probably wasn't very cost effective for a mere 200MHz increase in speed. You would have been better off getting an Athlon 64.

hi jam,
thanks for the posts...
my location is wakefield, UK.
the pc is an acer pc purchased 12 months ago.

the board looks familiar, MSI do one similar but if you look carefully there are differences, so yes I think it is a gigabyte board.
The only reason I gave the model number finishing in MAE is because there is an ID sticker on the board, right over the manufacturer logo which is now unreadable.
I know it wasn't much of a hike in GHz when I installed the 3400+, the 754 socket restricts choice but it has made a good difference and now wonder if any more is available by O/C.
can you assist.

I'm running an Asus S754 board with an A64 3000+ (2.0Ghz) which I'm running at 2.5GHz. I've tested it at 2.7GHz for a short time & had no probs at that speed, but decided to play it safe.

Have you checked your BIOS to see if there are any overclock settings available? If there's not, you can try the software approach:

I ran across this board when I was searching earlier, but since you said your's is a Gigabyte, I didn't bother to mention it:

Hi Jam,
Thanks again.
The more I look at the board, comparing it to the axper you kindly posted, the more convinced I am it is a Gigabyte. It is most inconvenient that the ID sticker to which I refered earlier is right over the logo.
You will see from the original post that the bios settings are adjustable:
Bios Settings:- Award v6.0PG
K8 CPU Clock ratio - set to DEFAULT.
The other options being x5 ~ x10. in steps of 1.
Auto Detect PCI Clock - Enabled.
CPU Host Clock (200MHz) Control - Disabled. (range 200~455 when enabled)
1. the Clock Ratio has arange starting at its Default setting - (which I presume to be 4), because the FSB is supposed to be 800mhz,
through 5,6,7,8,9,10
2. the CPU Host Clock - which is disabled at the moment,,can be enabled and this then gives a range from 200mhz which is the current setting, through 455mhz.
From all I have read on this subject I would be inclined to Enable the host clock first and increase the value to say 210mhz. Don't want to go daft as system since install 3400+ and max memory is stable, crisp, and more eager to perform.
What do you think then.

Hi There shipmates, enabled host clock control and increased fsb from 200 to 210 in 2x5 mhz steps and tested through night using ORTHOS. I can find no user info for orthods but it says it passed all tests. The 3400+cpu benchmarked at 2.1GHZ and I am really pleased that it sems to be hangin in there.
Do you think I might get it to 2.2GHz ? if I could then I would be highly delighted and my feelings are that I would call it a draw then
