Hi

thinking of getting a sempron 2800 or 2600 as i have been told altough at standard they suck pretty bad when overclocked you can reach speeds of around 2.5 GHZ with the right board. I saw the 2800 chip for $60 new with fan but i was wondering if anyone has had any past experiences with the sempron 64 bit chip and its capabilities.

Thanks

Who said "they suck pretty bad"?

Do not get the 2600+, it only has 128k L2 cache. The 2800+ has 256k L2 & is the best buy in the S64 lineup...newegg has them for under $80 shipped. The 3100+ w/256k goes for close to $100, but for about $15 more, you could get an A64 w/512k.

Overclockability will depend on the motherboard. If you don't already have a board, look for one based on the nForce3 250 or nForce3 250Gb chipset.

Hellz Yea!

Thanks,I basicly want to build a second PC as cheap as possible but for $60 CPU it seems the best value.

As for cards, the 6200 AGP (non turbo cashe) apparently unlocks to 8 pipelines and gets a very good 3100 3dmarks on 3dmark 05!

Are you sure it's an S64 2800+ for $60 & not the 32-bit Sempron?

THe 2800+ 256k cache is a sempron64 and has the palmero core. The core clock runs at 1.6 but many overclock to 2.0 to 2.2 on stock cooling which seems to be the sweet spot as it still runs at under 40c with a full load. Some oc to 2.6 on stock cooling and say it still runs cool. Running at 2.6 is equal to the 3700+. I wonder what is possible with water cooling. lmao you would have to pay twice as much for the water pump than the cpu.

running it at 2.6 = 3700 AMD 64 or Sempron 64?

Okay, so if it was to go up to say 2.6 Ghz what would it equal to in AMD 64 processor.

Your question is kind of hard to answer. If amd sold both a san diego 3700 and a palmero 3700 i would say the san diego would out perform the palmero in some ways but for the most part they should be generally equal.

palmero with 2.6 = 3700+
san diego with 2.2 = 3700+

I should have my 2800 running in 2-3 days I can post a cpu mark score running at 2.6 then if you would like.

ok ive read a couple posts now where they say the palmero running at 3400+ only equals a 3000+ amd64, and that a palmero running at 2.5 only beats an athlon 3400+ by 5 percent.

Ill be back with that cpu mark score in a couple days.

However, if you have a sempron running at 2.5 ghz and it beats a 3400 AMD 64 bit then one could say they are worthy of an investment?

if you could post your PC mark results that would be fab.. or SIS.

Cheers
