Comment:

Hi, I have a Northwood at 3.0 Mhz, the bios allows to overlock it till 4%, which is the safe value to overclock this kind of processor and not to burn it?

It is virtually impossible to "burn" a P4 by overclocking it and no we can't tell you precisely when to stop!

Don't use the percentage setting...overclock the 'right' way. In other words, adjust all the settings manually.

I think overclocking is a cool feature, I had an Athlon Duron 3200xp+ running at 1600 mhz and overclocked at 2200, now I have a "real" pc and am afraid to overclock this cpu but knowing myself I'll put my pc at its maximun limits right this afternoon so i just wanted to know the "safe" limits.
Not to mean "burn" just mean "fried"
Any more advices??? thanks

It seems this is not a good day for overclocking nothing, even my brain.
I think I need some sleep before send my cpu to heaven.

There is no Athlon Duron & there is no Duron 3200+xp. You probably got suckered in by one of the ECS/PCChips boards with the integrated CPUs. I'm guessing your CPU was called a Pro3200+ or something like that. This issue was discussed over 2 yrs ago when these garbage board/CPU combos were introduced.

Regardless, a true Athlon XP3200+ is at least as good if not better than your 3.0GHz P4. Gigahertz rating means very little these days.

Jam, I know you know Athlon XP's like the back of you hand. So what was the highest you could ever get a Athlon XP Burton core stable?

AMD Athlon 64 X2 4600+ OC 2.7ghz
2GB Dual Channel DDR 3200
Nvidia 7900GT
SATA II 2x 300gig 7200rpm 16mb cache RAID-0
Gigabyte Nforce 4 SLI

jam and others have done some really good stuff with good motherboards. Something like 9x220 sticks in my mind with his old 1800+. That might not stack up to what some others have tried to set a record but, I think you can rest assured that jam's machines work. Not just for a few minutes but day in and day out.

A Northwood 3.0Ghz is a pretty good overclocker on a quality motherboard and with quality memory...

I see some problems here for much success.
Is that motherboard oc friendly?
Not enough memory and possible not good enough memory to pull off much of an overclock.
That video card has to be replaced.
The stock Northwood cooler should be replaced with a low dollar stock Prescott hsf or an aftermarket cooler that is capable of cooling a Prescott core chip.
This is all gonna add up to some serious time and money and you still might not be able to pull off a good overclock.
A 4% oc might show you some benchmark improvements but, you won't be able to tell the machine is any faster or more useable.

My 2¢ would be to use the machine as it is.
