run processor at slower bus

Comment:
I have a AA722396-108 motherboard (OEM version of Intel SE440BX-2 Motherboard).
It's now running a pIII 450, 100 bus.
I have a pIII 1 ghtz, 133 bus chip.
Should I even attempt to run this chip on this board or will it cause damage to the board or chip? (chip only cost me $3, so I'm willing to experiment).
I know i need to by an adapter for the slot 1 board.

You may want to check the tech specs on a website.
A couple of months ago I switched out a p3 600 100 for a p3 1000 133 that I scavenged. Using the fan that I got with the p3 1000, the new processor worked like a dream. Admittedly, they were both same-socket processors.
All the tech specs I've found so far say that it requires 100 mhz bus. Most say I can try up to 850 mhz processor, some say any processor speed (as long as bus is 100). Did you go from a slot 1 processor to a slot 1 processor?
Thanks

Summary: Jam is dead on. The processor is made to use as much speed as it needs to. There is no point running it at full speed when it doesn't need to, that would defeat the purpose of a mible process for one ...
Summary: AMD motherboards are designed to run at 100, 133 and some of the latest now run at 166mhz FSB. This is to accomodate the various AMD processors. Most motherboards come with the FSB jumper set to 100mh...
