Reseating Heatsink

I got worried that I put the heatsink that came with my new P4 2.80GHz chip on wrong so I removed it to check(Have not yet used the CPU). It was on right but when I removed it some of the thermal patch stayed on the CPU. Do I need to remove it and use thermal paste or can I put the sink back on?
