I want to replace my Intel Celeron 633 (SL3VS) with the highest Intel Pentium III that will work. Here is my old processor specs. 633Mhz, FC-PGA, 66Mhz bus speed, cB0 core stepping, 128KB L2, CPUID string 0683, core voltage 1.65, .18 micron, 9.5 bus/core ratio. If compaq and my research is correct, a PIII 933Mhz is the highest (SL44J). Is this true or is their a bigger processor I can swap in? Also when looking for a replacement CPU, what specifications need to be the same as my old CPU (stepping, CPUID string, core voltage, bus/core ratio)?? Thanks for the help.

As far as I know, P3 933MHz is the highest you can go.
The P3 runs at 100 FSB while your celeron runs at 66MHz.
Make sure your mother board can handle 100MHz fsb.

One of my friends has an old crappy tomato board that is not stable beyond 82MHz though the mobo can reportedly do 124!! what crap!
So my P3 550 is running underclocked on his machine after I gave it to him as I got my self my current setup.

The vcore of the celeron is 1.65V while for the 933MHz P3 it is 1.7V. Look up your mobo manual to see if you have the option to change the vcore or if there is any autodetect feature or if it is fixed.
The 866MHz P3 has its vcore set to 1.65V, which makes me think the 933MHz P3 is a 866MHz overclocked to 933 by intel themselves!

Good Luck and Happy Computing,

ur only gona gain 300mhz and you might make your system unstable. Just oover clook it too get like 800 mhx and it would be free + there is no risk in buying an uncompatible prosesor. I really recomend you upgrade ur mobo though since thebest ur gona get is 933mhz...kinda slow...but then again i need to upgrade to..i only got 2.04ghz (aprox 2040mhz)

HAve u ever duct taped a cmos battery in your computer?...it works

The 933 Mhz P3 has an FSB of 133, not 100, so make sure your motherboard supports that. If it doesn't, you'll only be able to run that 933 Mhz chip at 700 Mhz (100 x 7).

As far as overclocking is concerned, since your machine is a Compaq, you may be limited in this respect (probably no FSB settings other than 66/100/133, assuming you even have 100 and 133 available, and no user-selectable voltage settings), as most brand name computers aren't designed for this.

Good luck.
