Hello

Hope everyone’s grand, I have a few questions about changing a CPU any help would be hugely appreciated (I’ve done my best to find out the info for myself, but now a little stuck).

I’m Upgrading My CPU from a single core AMD 3800+ to an AMD 5600+ X2. My Mobo’s a ASUS M2N68-LA (http://www.skycomp.com.au/product.aspx?id=144003) My bios version is Phoenix Technologies 5.02

Will I need to flash my BIOS?

& if so does anyone know where I can get the needed BIOS from, & if so do you have to flash the BIOS from a floppy drive (as I don’t have one) or are there other possibilities.

Would it be necessary to replace the heatsink & fan as the current one only has a 3 pin connector (which is all the mobo can take) and the one purchasing has four?

Any help would be hugely appreciated.

Additionally slightly concerned about power needs running a 7900GTX + that CPU on a decent 450W PSU (believe about 24/6amps on the 12v rail).

Any opinions or help would be hugely appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Chris

You should not have to flash the bios as the motherboard is said to support dual core AMD cpu's.

And the fan should be ok with the 3 leads, as long as the fan is connected to the correct voltage connector.

The PSU should be ok also as long as it is not a cheapie.

That's an HP board model number:

If that's what you have, there is a BIOS update available from HP & it's run from within Windows. It fixes some issues with Sleep & Hibernate modes, & also something to do with the ipod shuffle:

Thanks Smitty & Iam, that is a bit of a relife that i shouldn't have to do it.

is it odviouse which way around to conect the heatsink cable for the 4 lead to be spare (belive thats OK to do)

Now i just have to hope that i don't destroy the CPU with clumsyness, (it's my first time).

Do you know anywhere where i could get a step by step instructions on the process.

Thanks again
