Subject: Replaced Heatsink, PC won't Boot?? OS: win98 CPU/Ram: Athlon XP 1800

Comment: I replaced my Thunderbird heatsink with a quieter Globalwin BKII58 and since then my PC will not boot. All the power etc works fine but my monitor will not start and I am getting no beeps back from the PC. The shop that sold me the heatsink say I need to take the motherboard out of the case and connect up just the power, case speaker and case power. As the motherboard may have warped! Anyone got any other ideas. Please help. Thanks

Reply: (edit)Double check that you connected the fan to the designated CPU Fan power port on the board.

Reply: (edit)well...with installing a heatsink goes the risk of cracking the cpu. Take cpu out and examine it for cracks. If you have access to another board test the cpu in the other board. Or if you have another cpu test it out in the board thats not starting up. Its a process of elimination. You have to narrow the problem down to a single piece of hardware.

Reply: (edit)And also...did you ground yourself before you handled your cpu. Most people I find dont ground themselves before handling computer parts. ESD will fry your computer parts without you even knowing about it.

Reply: (edit)Also, did you use a good compound and make sure that the heatsink seated to the cpu firmly??? I hope so cuz usually when your pc won't boot because of a change like that, it means yoru chip is fried

Reply: (edit)Make sure cpu is seated correctly. make sure fan cable is connected in the proper pins and make sure it's the proper orientation. if cpu is bad, then possibly motherboard should beep. motherboard could have been damaged.
