my sister in-law has an old compaq presario 4716. this machine has a socket 7 mother board (everest couldn't identify it) with a pentium 233mmx. I see no way to change the core voltage in the bios or via jumpers. is it possible to put a k6-2 in this without damaging anything?

Most K6-2s run at 2.2v. The 233MMX runs at 2.8v. If you can't figure out how to adjust the voltage, muliplier, & FSB, I wouldn't attempt it. There must be a way, & it's probably on the board, not in the BIOS. Look for jumpers, or a DIP switch. The settings are sometimes printed right on the board. While you're poking around inside, see if you can ID the motherboard chipset...if it's an old Intel 430FX, TX, VX, or HX (w/o the tag RAM), you'll get better performance with 64MB RAM due to the memory cache limitation built into those old chipsets.

Trust me on this, the answer is no.

You could look into an Overdrive type chip, but those are probably not available anymore.

If you can't find a way to change the voltage then try and find a cheap secondhand powerleap adaptor. (check the compatability list first though)

thanks for all the responses it really hepled me out. she was given the computer, and she is a single mom with no extra money so I,ve been trying to make it run as good as possible. It had windows 95, scandisk from the c prompt found over 300 crosslinked files, so I formated and put on 98. Also set her up with the free version of netzero (10hrs/month). the orginal compaq 33.6K modem works fairly well, but since we have found out we can't do much with the proceessor, I went on e-bay and spent $9.80 on an external US robotics 56k sportster.
