I want to replace the thermal paste on my cpu but I know that it is kinda sticky stuff. I went through some of the posts on here and couldn't see one for it but I know that I did read it on here somewhere's. I don't want to remove it if I don't have what I need to get the stuff off.

why are you replacing the paste?
do you have heat issues?
are you fitting a new heat sink?
if non of these apply dont just change your paste. why create a problem out of nothing.
if you do need to replace it. buy a camera lens cleaning kit. this will have both a lint free cloth and some rubbing alchol (90% or more) that you need to clean your cpu core of paste and be very careful

Something tells me you are talking about the thermal pad on a retail heatsink and not thermal paste.

I'm sorry, I should of known better then to not explain why. I replaced my cpu a few months ago but I didn't clean it then. I used what was already on (hsf). I want to take my system to 150/150 but I need to do the wire trick for it to run stable. So when I do this I will be taken care of two problems at once. My cpu is still at stock voltage 1.65. You said 90% alcohol, would I be able to use alcohol??

It's a Coolermaster "whisper rock" and it did have a square of thermal paste, at least I thought that's what it was. When I replace the cpu I used the same hsf and didn't clean it or add any more to it.

Try scrapping off the old material as best you can with the edge of a credit card (or somthing similar)...don't use anything made of metal. Once you've done that, remove the rest with some sort of oil-free solvent. Alcohol or acetone are a couple of things you may have around the house. Personally, use carb cleaner...it works great & no residue. Make sure not to touch it after it's clean...fingerprints & skin oil can affect the thermal transfer...

I use qtips and 99% rubbing alcohol

The most important thing about thermal paste installation is not mashing out a bare spot by installing the sink clumsily

Well guys, Thanks for the replies. I got it done and it is working great. I'm now at 150/150 fsb. CPU at 2.25 ghz. The wire trick worked well too.
Thanks again.

15x150 can only come from a cheap mobo and great psu. Good work.

I prefer cheepoman to honeyx. Have you tried both?

I'm curious where you got instructions for the wire trick.

I felt kinda bad for going there but it was on the board that I have. I still come here for alot of other things though. THIS forum is what got me started in the first place.

the reason I asked is I made a somewhat detailed post here a year or two ago explaining how to do the wire trick that you did. I also put it on ocworkbench.

johnoh, I've only been in this forum for about 6 months. It hasn't been that long. So I wouldn't know of your post back then. Were you the one that figured that out? If so, nice job.

nah the first guy to read the xp manual was probably the first guy to figure it out. I did come up with an algorithm that calculates the sockets to connect for vcore and multiplier changes.
