Instead of buying a new CPU cooler I plan to
use the retail one i got with my CPU and
upgrade the Thermal interface to Artic
cooloig silver 5. How would I go about
removing the old stuff? Thanks!

Merry Christmas!

Do you realize that AMD does NOT recommend Arctic Silver & that using it will void the retail warranty?

Just thought I'd let him know.

Personally, I use the original thermal pad. If for some reason I remove the heatsink, I obviously have to use paste. But I NEVER use Arctic Silver...EVER!

why no arctic silver jam?
I thought it was the best around...I have no thermal paste whatsover between the cpu and the heat sink. Am running 154MHz core on the 2000+ and playing NFS 5 with max resolution and all players + traffic; my temp is below 56 C.
impressive? ;)

err...its another matter that the side covers are off and I have stuck an old cel333 heatsink fan to the video card heat sink

Artic Silver is conductive. If too much is applied it can short out the bridges. Why are you running without paste, are you using a pad, or nothing? I would recommend you reconsider this policy.

I don't use Arctic Silver for several reasons:

1. it's conductive

2. it's expensive

3. it's expressly not recommended by AMD

4. I'm anti-social

I've mentioned this before, but I use cheap Radio Shack paste ($2) on everything I build, unless I'm using a new heatsink w/pad. Currently, my O/C'd 1800+ idles in the low to mid 30's, depending on room temp.

I realize that, but I'm not an O/C extremist, nor am I a bigtime gamer. I just wanted a reasonably high FSB & wasn't too concerned with maxing out my clock speed.

At least you didn't comment on my "paste of choice"...lol

Hello jam, OtheHill,
After I removed the CPU from the slot and put in a sempron for some testing, I removed the old paste with nail polish remover :D (its spirit based) and as I did not have a paste decided to put it on w/o it. To be honest I have not enquired in computer shops here if they have thermal paste. I wil do that now.
I anyway would not have fried the CPU, it has a auto shut down feature right?

I had not set the heat sink right after putting my athlon back and the cpu would get switched off in a few seconds time after a mild "click" sound (the sound of some thermal relay making or breaking contact). I just realised how much on the edge AMD runs their processors. A lil mis fit of the heat sink and the cpu does not even run!
For the great VFM CPUs that AMD makes, they must give better Heat sinks.

robdos,

I think I can speak for lazyman here. He just doesn't mince words and he will simply give his opinion without a protracted explanation.

Here's what I can tell you all about him:

He's not exactly a kiddie; hell, he's old.
He knows what he's talking about
He develops and manufactures computer parts.
He's practical: his articles, reviews, products, and opinions are respected worldwide.
You might want to look in on his homepage:

...he's got a swell dog.

No intention of flaming anyone, just thought ya might want to know something about him.

Merry Christmas folks,

I'm still interested to know how AMD know what thermal interface has been used when receiving a dead processor.

Skip, jam,

Talk about "old" and "spring chicks", speak for yourself.;) As long as you could narrow the generation gap with your 30 year-old kid you are doing alright.:^D

As for how do "they" (both AMD and Intel) know if you are screwing around with thermal paste or not ...... one single question they ask "please let me know the P/N on the heatsink fan that came with your retail pack prcoessor".

Followed by "Please return both the processor and heatsink together with the retail pack and receipt of purchase to the address listed."

When you own/run a business; a Billon $ business you know how to run it without being taken; Business school helps, but common sense always works.;)

If you clean it very well they probably can't tell. Kialas I don't believe the Semptrom chips have overheating protection built in. Most MBs do have an Auto shutdown in the BIOS, although by the time the sensor detects an overheat condition it may be too late. If you can't find thermal paste see if you CAN find a thermal pad.

Here's one document available from AMD that concerns warranty replacement.

http://home.comcast.net/~skip9/AMD_return.pdf

Last paragraph on next to last page will give you an idea of the information you'll need to provide AMD support.

As lazyman said, these folks are not morons and want to protect their business. In addition, if they do have a chip failure, they want to know exactly why it failed.

I am not an overclocker so I usually buy Retail processors and use the thermal pad. When I don't have a thermal pad, I use cheap silicone HS paste. I do understand why AMD has the policy they have. I have seen folks use 10 times the required amount of paste, coveing the entire bottom of the HS.
