My problem is that my computer always reboots after I select shutdown on Windows or if I manually press the power off button.
The system goes through the complete shutdown process flicks off and then immediately turns back on and begins rebooting.
The only way to safely shutoff is to load a floppy boot disk and press the power off button.
Once I get the CPU off, it won't let me turn it on for at least 10 minutes. Is this heat issue?
I have no problems booting and the system is stable otherwise even during benchmarking/heavy gaming. Nothing is overclocked.
This problem ocurred with a fresh Win98SE install or a fresh WinXP Home install so I don't think this is a software issue.
The system is 2 years old and began showing symptons 4 months ago.
I have updated all drivers and bios.

Athlon 1.1 GHz
Gigabyte GA-7DX ver 3.0
256 MB Crucial DDR PC1600
20GB Maxtor HD
Winfast GeForce4 Ti4600
SB Audigy
Creative DVD 12X/40X w/DXR3
Creative 8X/4X/32X CD-RW
Heating: 1 front fan blowing in and 1 rear fan blowing out
CPU temp runs from 45-52 C and system temp is 24 C

What is the wattage on your power supply? Have you added any new components or upgraded roughly the same time the problems started?

If you don't see any other problems other than not shutting down, only thing i can think of is that it's the motherboard. but could be the cpu?? weird

Froggx and Kev,
Thanks for the fast response.
My power supply is 300W. The big power draws are the two optical drives, hard drive, and video card. With a Ti4600, I know I am reaching the limits of the 300W? My next course of action is to remove the optical drives and video card to see if the problem persists.
My last upgrade was the Ti 4600 9 months ago. The reboot issue didn't happen until 4 months ago so I don't think it is a new hardware conflict.
Right now, I'm leaning towards a bad power supply that rejects the signal to turn off. Any other ideas?

If possible, try it with another power supply. With that much drain on it, that could quite possibly be the issue and it could just be going bad.

I have a system running a GigiByte GA-7DXR and everytime I shutdown it reboots the PC.

I am still trying to find the answer.

I have the same problem with a DXR - it used to work fine, but no longer does for some reason.

I've tried most things I can think of, but will be taking a long hard look tonight. I'll let you know how I get on.

I found the issue, you need to disable the "PME wake up even" in the "power management" in the BIOS setup.

It resolved it for me.

ComputerGuy,
You solved it! My problem was the "PME wake up even." I reset to disabled and the problem is gone. You're a lifesaver. Thanks for the help.
