Comment:

I don't really know if I put this in the right spot, but close enough.

My computer has been running unreasonably slow for no reason at all. I am running an 800 MHz cpu and it can play an average-bitrate MP3 at about 50%. My other computer (266 MHz) can play the same files at about 30%.

Is there something wrong? Can I change some settings to make this computer usable? One of the main reasons I bought this computer was for it's DVD player - dosen't even come close to playing a DVD.

Thanks for your help.

you do all the regular disk cleanups and defrags?

99% of computer problems are not the motherboard nor power supply but simply between the keyboard and the chair.

TOSHIBA is a laptop not a PC, and laptops are not ideal for DVD Watching.

800mhz Celeron CPU's are poor performers and due to laptops inherently throttle the CPU it is difficult to squeeze the max from the CPU.

Windows XP requires 256MB memory to run OK, at least 512MB would be better, therefore you are permanently running out of physical memory when running XP let alone watching a DVD.

A better propsition would be a standalone portable DVD Player, as upgrading this laptop would not be either wise or cost effective.

Maybe before you bought this laptop you should of researched as this type of questions has been answered in various forums over the last five or so years....

I did not ONLY buy this laptop for the media. It is a working laptop as well. I do all of the defrags and disk cleanups weekly but still no help. I plan to buy another 256 ram chip as soon as I get the money. And also, why does it matter weather it's a laptop or a PC and what does that have to do with my question?

Why aren't laptops good for watching DVD again?

It's not the Laptop, it's prob the graphics chip in the Laptop. Laptops can view DVD's fine. in fact, the widescreen laptops were made around stuff like watching DVD on them etc...

Old laptops on the other hand due tend to have problems playing anything that is very graphical in nature due to the basic graphics chip within the laptop.

Newer laptops don't have this problem. Now of days you can buy a 600 dollar laptop and watch DVD's on them just fine, because the graphics chip in there are capable of viewing things not too graphical in nature but good enough without having to worry about the stuff that old laptops had to deal with.

But if the laptop came with a DVD drive, it should obviously be capable of playing DVDs.

When you are playing DVD's or MP3's are all the extra features on? I assume you are using WMP, if so turn off all features like SRS WOW effects and the graphic equaliser. Also make sure no other programs are open and that nothing much is running in the background. Hopefully this should lighten the load on the CPU and RAM and allow you to play DVD's.

I have stopped all background programs. I have tried WMP with all effects/equalizers off and eventually changed all the settings for the least CPU-consumption possible. I have also tried Cyberlink PowerDVD and a freeware program called Lalim DVD player (and changed the settings on those.) Still no help. I have no problem with this computer's audio playing, it doesn't skip/pause or anything. I would just like it to be able to reasonably play a DVD.

Lalim DVD Player is availible here if anyone's interested:

It probably needs more memory then, Guess that this laptop was probably origanally sold with windows 98Se on it which consumed less RAM. Once you have a bit more you should be good. I had a 566Mhz celeron with 192Mb of RAM and Win XP and it played DVD's well, altough the hard disk was working like mad with the swap file most of the time. I guess you were just off.

I just added a bit more RAM (64MB) and it made no noticible difference at all.

I had the same problem with my laptop and I had a plenty qualified system. My problem laid in the hardware acceleration, none of my dvd programs were utilizing the gpu's hardware acceleration during playback. Take a look at that and lemme know what you find out. Also just out of curiousness what is the gpu in the laptop anyways?
