OS: Vista Ultimate
CPU/Ram: Pentium D 805 / 2048mb DD
Product: my own custom rig
Comment:

i've done my best but i can't get very far so i need a little help, cheers!

my specs:
-pent. d 805 2.66Ghz @ 3.00
(stock cooling)
-2x1Gb 'Elixir' DDR2-667
-AsRock 775 Dual-VSTA
-500w generic PSU

i understand that my mobo doesnt allow changes to the vcore (i think!). so 3.00ghz is as far as i can OC without and bios mod. as jam has told me.

the only bios changes i have made for the ram is to set it to dual channel mode and force to recognise as 667 rather than 'Auto'.

so can anyone help me with wat timings and other settings would be optimal for best performane from my cpu and ram, thanks!

I answered this yesterday but it appears your post was deleted.

"the only bios changes i have made for the ram is to set it to dual channel mode and force to recognise as 667"

Your CPU:DRAM ratio should be 1:1. If you were running your CPU at it's default speed (FSB at 266MHz), your RAM should be clocked to run at 266MHz (DDR2-533), even though it's DDR2-667. I believe you've increased the CPU FSB from 266MHz (1066) to 300MHz (1200)? Your RAM should be clocked at 300MHz to match. There's no point running the RAM faster than the CPU.

With DDR2 RAM, timings don't make as big a difference as you may think. Have a look at these Tom's Hardware articles:

http://www.tomshardware.com/2006/02...

http://www.tomshardware.com/2005/07...

If you don't have CPUZ, I suggest you download it & use it to check your CPU & RAM settings. The Memory tab will show your current RAM settings. Click on the SPD tab & the default timings for the various bus speeds are listed in the timings table. The timings for 266MHz (DDR2-533) *should* be better than the ones listed for 333MHz (DDR2-667)...try those settings.

jam.. i changed my ram to be read as 553 and the result is a change from

fsb:dram - 1:2

to

fsb:dram - 5:8

i just got the latest version of cpu-z, and i can now get that spd info u mentioned.
so with ratio of fsb to dram, is it a case of lowest difference between the two is better? thanks

fsb:dram should be 1:1, anything else gives less performance

jam, i think i still need help!

im not sure how to tell the fsb u mentioned but i can tell u that i have the cpu at 150x20 under the bios, giving me the 3.0ghz.

i changed the ram setting to be read as 533 instead of 667, however that only got me as far as a 5:8 fsb to dram ratio down from 1:2.5 (as found through cpuz).

do i need to change any 'latencies' to achieve a closer ratio or should i leave it?
cpuz says i currently have them at:

Memory: DDR2/2048mb/Dual Channel/4-way

Frequency - 240.1MHz
FSB:DRAM - 5:8
CAS# Latency - 4.0
RAS# to CAS# Delay - 4
RAS# Precharge - 4
Cycle Time(Tras) - 12

Command Rate - 2T

CPU:

Core Speed - 3000.0 MHZ
Multiplier - x 20.0
Bus Speed - 150 MHz
Rated FSB - 600 MHz

wat should i change, if anything, thanks!

Sorry, apparently I got your post mixed up with another. The default speed for your CPU is 20 x 133MHz, so your RAM should be set at 266MHz, not 533MHz...that should give you 1:1 ratio.

BTW, are you running the latest BIOS version (v2.70)?

still workin towards that ratio lol..

but im fairly certain my bios isnt v2.70.
i havent been game/bothered to update it.
is there much advantage of doing so. i will google to find out but is there any main updates which are of major benefit? thanks jam
