I am fixing a Compaq Presario 5000 and need to replace or add to the current 64 mb ram. Need at least 128meg but don't know what brands and models would be compatable. It is running either 66 or 100 bus ( I can't remember a the moment). I need it cheap. Any suggestions?

You should buy PC-100 168 pin SDRAM DIMM. Look at here for your computer model and compatible memory: http://www.memoryx.net/copr50seme.html
Or just take your current memory to computer store ask for help there.

I used to work at the local store and they are idiots. I just need to know where I can find more specific specs for old machines. For example, must the ram be low density or can I use high? etc.
Thank you, I did use that link to order some, I just want to know for future reference.

I currently have 2 Compaq Desktops, the first; a 5000 series, model 5WV282, to which I added 256mb of PC100 ram from Centon Electronics(total 384mb), it works fine but I would like to tweak the cpu on this model. The second; a model 4824a to which I now have 588mb of ram, a 32mb video card, a 733MHz cpu, a 40gb HD, and other upgrades. There are several sites (Powerleap.com) that will test your system and give you a report and recommendations on upgrading. I tried getting help from my local stores/shops but they appear to not know what I'm talking about or don't care.
