ram error due to oc?

OS: winxp pro
CPU/Ram: 512
Product: me
Comment:

I was messing around with my pc last night and desided to reun a memory test. I ended up getting a few hundered errors (400ish). I only had one stick of 512 in. My mobo (msi 7125 v 2.0 neo4 ultra) came with a crappy bios that doesn't have access to oc settings. I did install "core center" which is an ap that lets you raise the "fsb", voltages etc. from the desktop.

I was running at 222mhz (lets you increase by percentage, was at 11% increase). This was makeing my RAM run at 220 as well. I installed AMD tweaker and lowered the setting to run at 166 instead of 200 and my RAM mhz dropped to 174ish. I ran the test again, no errors.

My question is, were the errors I got due to the increase in speed? (is that how to check RAM stability when oc'ing?) I know that 11% is too much for the RAM I have, so I am hoping thats it.

I am planning on flashing the BIOS as I have read that there is an updated BIOS that has all the advanced setting added back in. I am going to get rid of the MSI Core Center app. and do all the settings normally by changing BIOS. Figure I would ask so I can test my new RAM and see what it can take. Thanks

Do NOT overclock using software! You *may* need a BIOS update, but my guess is you're simply not familiar with your BIOS settings....everything you need for overclocking is in the DRAM Configuration menu & Cell menu.

DRAM Configuration Menu:

Timing Mode = manual
Memclock index value (Mhz) = 166

** I can't recommed timings because I don't know your RAM specs....stock timings are probably 2.5-3-3-7? If they are, try 2.5-3-3-11

1T/ 2T Memory Timing = 1T

Cell Menu:

High Performance Mode = manual
Aggressive timing = disabled
Dynamic Overclocking = disabled
Adjust CPU FSB Frequency = 250MHz
HT Frequency = 4x
HT Width = 16 16
CPU Spread Spectrum = disabled
SATA Spread Spectrum = disabled
PCIE Spread Spectrum = disabled
PCIE Clock = 100MHz
Cool’n’Quiet control = disabled
Adjust CPU Ratio = 11x

** voltages are adjusted on an as necessary basis

I have checked the bios many times. I only have 2 options under DRAM Configuration. (can't remember what they are, but the only options on either is enable/disable and auto/disable) This is what I have found referring to my board. Seems to be a bit of an oddball,

Thats the only info i have found so far. All the posts seem accurate (fujitsu/siemens splash screen, v2.0 not listed by MSI etc., no advanced options etc.) I have looked at the BIOS at least 10 times trying to find anything resembling the screens listed in the manual or that let me change settings to manual with no luck. I normally don't trust forums until I can confirm with the OEM, but since they don't have a listing for the 2.0 bios, I am going to cross my fingers and try the v1.0.
Having never flashed a bios, I was going to try "live update" from MSI, but I have heard that it doesn't work as good as its supposed to. The read me file included with the bios is confusing as well. It states to not use a floppy, then says to create a bootable dos floppy with xp and boot to that. I have found a seperate description that explains how to flash an award bios on the MSI site that is much clearer. It says to boot to dos floppy, insert the floppy with the flash uti.lity and bios on it, type the command and then follow the prompts, reboot.

I will get rid of the oc programs I have on there. They are pretty much useless and I don't want to spend too much time until I get the new memory, gfx card and bios set-up. Any advice on my plans is appreciated. thanks

After reading more of the forum I linked to, I think I may try "Live Update". It seems to be OK as long as you close everything else.

Dude, don't do it! If you're gonna update the BIOS, do it the right way...from DOS using a boot floppy.

Before you do something that may totally trash your board, I suggest you send a private message to heropsycho2177...he's build a couple of systems using the same board & should be able help you out.

Well, I read thru most of that thread. I've encountered posts from "Zap" plenty of times & he knows his stuff, so "Live Update" might be worth a shot, especially since you don't have a floppy. One poster wrote:

"This board is PCB 1.0 Rev 2.0
The manual you've downloaded is for PCB 1.0 which is a correct one for this board.
There is no such a thing as PCB 2.0"

So it would appear that the info & link provided at Geeks.com is correct:

http://www.msi.com.tw/program/suppo...

Update the BIOS & try the settings I posted above.

You stated that there were only TWO options for DRAM settings. Did you try either or both of those options. My guess is that if you select the correct one there will be another menu that appears. Try it.

I have flashed two of those motherboards with the 1D BIOS without issues. I did use a floppy drive within DOS, but I'm old school like that. :-)

Didn't get nearly the results I've been able to get with my DFI LANParty motherboard for overclocking opteron 165's. Could have been a variance in the CPU, but they've all been the same steppings, and I can hit 2.7GHz clock per core on my DFI, while these MSI's have been at best 2.5GHz. But hey, for $50, good deal!
