Question about Dual Core
Name: Greatgamer Date: November 17, 2005 at 06:28:18 Pacific OS: XP CPU/Ram: AMD 3200
Comment:
Hello, so is the Dual Core much more powerful then the regular AMD 64 CPUs? Or are there restrictions like it not being able to run certain games or programs? Is this more for servers or something? Thanks

For games, a single core (for running a single process at 100% capacity) is better. For situations where you are running multiple processes then dual core is better.

Get an amd FX57 for ultimate gaming performance. It's a single core chip, and it KICKS ASS !
If by multitask you mean any kind of mundane office internet or small server stuff (gaming server, one or two user TS), then it doesn't matter. Get the FX57. Otherwise I would go for the much cheaper athlon 64. ATM dual core on desktops is more of a fad than a serious performance issue.

"Get the FX57"
While I agree it's an excellent CPU, it costs over $1000. That's insane! Unless you're independently wealthy, it's a waste of money. And unless you truly need a dual core CPU, get either the 3200+ Venice or the 3700+ San Diego. Be aware that AMD will soon be changing the socket format & the new A64 will support DDR2, so there will probably be more prices drops (there was a drop within the past 2 weeks) on S939 CPUs in the not too distant future.

I agree it's too pricey. I would rather wait for a week or two for the price to drop!!

Go out and get the S939 Opteron 64. Great value it runs at 2ghz, L1 64k, L2 1mb chace, plus you can overclock it to 2.9ghz on a fan cooled system. Not to mention it's only 190 bucks!
