I'm not really into concole gaming anymore, but I am however interested in the hardware and new technology being implemented to power ever evolvoling graphics in games. I figured some at this site will find this an interasting read.

As the subect of this topic suggects, The New PlayStation 3 will be packing A very powerfull processor Code Named "Cell" Which might make our current system yesterdays news, and pail in comparison.

IBM,Sony, and Toshiba Team up to produce "Cell",Cell's breakthrough multi-core architecture and ultra high-speed communications capabilities deliver vastly improved, real-time response for rich media applications, in many cases 10 times the performance of the latest PC processors.

Here are some of the highlights of Cell Tech.

"Cell is a breakthrough architectural design -- featuring eight synergistic processors and top clock speeds of greater than 4.3GHz (as measured during initial hardware testing)
Cell is a multicore chip capable of massive floating point processing (1 trillion)
Cell is "OS neutral" and supports multiple operating systems simultaneously" such as linux, Windows, OS10!!

I Would have provided links, howerver there are just too many of them to post here. I hear google is pretty goog...lol. Like more info on vid-card specs and so-force. I am curious to know people thoughts on this subect, hince why i'm posting.

Pretty impressive. I'm a console guy myself, but just Xbox, so I'm hoping that Microsoft comes out with something like that. It could also just be a lot of hype. Just because it is capable of doing all that stuff, doesn't mean that it will in the PS3.

I know that Microsoft is also working with IBM for it's new Xbox chip, so, this could get interesting.

If that's so that may shake up Intel and
AMD quite a bit. Especially if that part
about OS neutral means you could also put
it into a PC!!!!!

But one question, how are ou cooling that
monster - compressor ????

Cell appears to have an advantage in the number of transistors - 234 million compared with 125 million for today's latest Pentium 4 chips. Traditional chip makers, however, have regularly doubled their number of transistors every 12 to 18 months.

Cell is said to run at clock speeds greater than 4 gigahertz, which would top the 3.8 GHz of Intel's current top-speed chip.

Cell's designers said they are running a variety of operating systems on the processor at their lab in Austin, Texas. But they would not say whether Microsoft's Windows is one of them. In fact, they only confirmed running Linux, the open source environment.

The PC industry has seen a long line of chips attempt to usurp the x86 architecture pioneered by Intel that dominates today's computers. But all have failed, and Intel remains the world's largest chip maker.

And IBM Corp. has said it will sell a workstation with the chip starting later this year.

PS3, Xbox 2 and Gamecube 2 will all have the G5 64bit processor chips in them, IBM already released details on what platforms their chips were going to be on a while back.

As for the GPU that is a diff story. All 3 consoles will have diff GPU's to them. So far ATI is going to work with Xbox 2 and it is unknown at this point on the other 2 consoles GPU's, but I'm sure E3 will release all the details.

According to some sources, the PS3 will, upon launch run around $300.00~$400.00! As did their predessecors, and eventually lower in price as time goes by. If this is infact true, then that would yeild upgrading custome pc's futile, to a certain extent ofcourse, but nevertheless a joke.

Intel is just now making mainstream 64-bit desktop CPU's, which will be implamenting dual core tech, but remember this is still based on the x86 architecture. And like all of intel's new line of processors, this comes with a bank account empting price tag, say $1000.00!

In the computer industry, $300.00 is really not a signifigent amount of money. I cant say how this team of techno leaders will only charge so little for such advanced components? There has to be a conflift of supply and demand issues going on here.

Would you pay $1000 for a PC if it's not upgradable and the only thing you can do with it is for the most part play games?...........just what I thought.

From what I understand, PS3 will use an Nvidia GPU and Xbox and Nintendo will both use ATI.

Think of how big your pc case is and how small a game console is I just can't think of how they are going to keep that system cool. Is there room for a nice heatsink I don't see how or were the air flow will go.

Galileo you got that all wrong, the dual core p4 smithfields will not be anywhere near a grand. In fact they will start out less then 220 dollars. I stated the p4 dual core prcing the intel artical in here and that is the offical roadmap and pricing for the p4 dual cores.

If intel sold the dual cores for a grand they will lose a ton of money because everyone would be saving 750-800 dollars by going out and getting an AMD 64 dual core instead. The days of Intel's like it or lump it pricing are over ever since AMD came into the picture.

Correction. The p4 dual cores will start at 241 dollars, I just looked at the intel thread to double check. Oh well, it is still pretty damn cheap even though the dual cores won't support H/T but hardly any software uses H/T anyhow and maybe that is why Intel is dropping it in the Smithfields.

One thing all of you are forgetting - Even if the thing has a 10Ghz processor is the output device most people use (TV) only supports 525 lines@50hz (PAL - im in newzealand) so unless your rich enough to add a plama HDTV (nz$6999) you are still getting lo res games which any PC will beat - all pc gamers will appreciate playing a game at 1024x768 and beyond which simply isnt possible with MOST tv sets people have sitting in their living rooms.

Yeah but even with that said it will still improve the gaming in almost every angle by 2x to 3x then the consoles that are out now.

HD is nice and all, I have one but it isn't like night and day like what color is to black and white.

How do you get it to run off a monitor? are the PS-2 games actually written to support higher resolutions than the PAL and NTSC standards? why would they ?? what resolution do you get from using a monitor on a ps2?
