I just bought a processor based on many peoples' insight and directions, while knowing I had an old dell dimension 2400 pci motherboard. The one I have now is a 2.2 ghz pentium 4 celeron processor. They told me to replace it with Intel Pentium 4 3.0 Prescott 3.0GHz 1MB L2 Cache Socket 478 89W Single-Core Processor because it would work on my motherboard. When I got the processor, I successfully replaced the old one with the new 3 ghz processor and it fit. I closed the heatsink over it and plugged my PC in only to watch my PC turn itself on. Though it was on, the monitor light was orange and no display was there. The PC's two front lights were on, but one was orange and the other green. I couldn't get it to do anything and I was forced to unplug it and put the old processor in. Am I doing something wrong? Do I need to update something? This is the right type of processor, so what do I have to do to make it work?

Would it have been so difficult to check the Dell website rather than taking "many peoples'" word for it?
The Dimenison 2400 supports 400MHz or 533MHz FSB CPUs only. Your Prescott runs at 800MHz FSB. Even if it was to work, if would only be able to run at 2.0GHz due to the lower FSB speed.
You bought the wrong CPU.
