Qn: While I was using my computer, I heard a snap sound and after that my monitor went black but my cpu's fan still continued to run. Next i switched off the power supply and opened up the computer. I tried to look for any burn marks as my computer has been overheating quite badly. I could not find any burnt marks on neither the graphic card nor the processor nor the motherboard nor ram. I also found out that even though the power supply is on again, i could not boot or POST even after resetting the cmos. What i found out is that my cdrom drive could not open when the power supply is turned on unlike moments before my computer black out... MY FINAL QUESTION IS WHICH PART OF MY CPU GOT FRIED, the PROCESSOR, MOTHERBOARD, GRAPHIC CARD OR THE RAM?

help me and u be helping many more

Seems to me that the likely culprit would be the pwr supply, since you don't have the ability to open the cdrom drawer. Borrow someone's pwr supply and try it. But you've got to get rid of your overheating problem, or problems will keep occurring.

Sounds like you blew a capacitor. Does the computer smell bad? Are any of the caps leeking or deformened? What brand and model is your mobo. Also you could have blew a cap in the power supply. (Don't take the ps apart). Just try a new one. When a ps goes bad sometimes it can take out other stuff with it.

Hey wats up guys. I have a problem very similar to desperado's. The cause however, isn't the same. I'm running XP w/ a regular 2.8 ghz p4,and 512 mb ram. I dismantled my computer on thursday so that I could do my computer science final project on building a computer. I was using the stock heatsink fan that came w/ the p4, which comes with a thermal pad. I was not aware that I had to remove it and apply new thermal gel. Good thing I crossed the wires for the power button and reset button, cause if I had got it working, I most surely would have fried it (the processor). My computer professor said that I had wires crossed and not to worry. I decided to buy a quieter, more powerful heatsink fan, and I installed that one. I fixed the wires, and turned it on w/ the new heatsink. However, the computer doesn't boot up. It powers on, but I don't get anything on my screen, and I get a high pitched, repeating beeping noise. Upon hearing it, I immediatly pulled the power cord. I read the user manual for my motherboard, and apparently, this beeping means that the cpu is overheating. I took off the heatsink and processor and cleaned the thermal gel off of both, and the processor looked and smelled fine. Whats going on guys? Can you help me? Thanks
