Hi guys,
I know Prescotts run ALOT hotter than Northwoods, and mine definatly does. I want to know what the highest safe temperature my 3ghz prescott can reach is. It currently idles at 50-55C, and while playing KOTOR2 it went over 70C which sounds an alarm. Reading on the web some people say 70C is the maximum, others say 70C is OK. I've tried loads of stuff to cool this beast, coolermaster case, themalright xp120 heatsink, i've even taken the side of the case of in a cold room!
I just want to know the maximum temperature it can reach before it gets damaged really.
Cheers
Alex

You can't damage a P4 by overheating, it's thermally protected & will simply "throttle back". However, throttling is undesireable because it will cause the system to run slower. You can use this program to find out if your CPU is throttling or not:

"I've even taken the side of the case of in a cold room!"

The above is counterproductive and should not be the norm unless you have something like a commercial fan blowing directly at the innards of your computer.

Just like jam said, frying the CPU should be less of a worry to you, the instructions your CPU is able to process @ 45'C can be handled just fine @ 65'C. If you run that program, figure out your throttle threshold and set your BIOS alarm to say 3-5'C before throttling kicks in.

That makes me question throttling and who it was designed for Vendor or Consumer.

Few things amongst others.

0. It is partly meant to help prevent and keep EMI leakage to barest minimum.

1. PC Cooling requires effective airflow path, with the side cover off, what is being circulated is same stagnant air.

2. It is easier for debris, pets and even kids to get in there.
