Hi I hope my power supply just shorted out as opposed to
my motherboard. It just shut down while gaming and
smelled like hot plastic. It's a pretty new unit. I switched
the 115V to 230V and tried to boot it, started but didn't
boot, then a spark flew out and I pulled the plug.I had the default power supply with my case, maybe 350W with a
80mm fan in back, 80mm fan on a side panel out (those are case fans). I have a 2.80 ghz P4, 1024 MB PC3200 2.5V ram, 256 mb ATI 9600XT, 200GB SATA, and some little case light up stuff that it came with. Should I be stepping it up to like 500W
power supply or more? Any brand recommendations are
welcome also. The power supply I have in seems a little
ghetto, I think theres just one fan on the rear side and
none on the front side. Any help appreciated.

500W is overkill for your system as is, but if you plan on major upgrades in the near future, it may be worth it.
Otherwise, if you're on a budget, newegg.com carries a Thermaltake 420W that suits you great for $38 shipped last I checked. Great quality, and should still allow some additional upgrades down the road.

I gotta say this...that was a stupid move switching from 115v to 230v. What were you thinking?
It's not unusual for a PSU to take the motherboard and other stuff out along with it. I'd start testing components...a new PSU may not be the only thing you need...

Most people will tell you that psu's from PCPowerandCooling are the best.I myself agree with that statement.Im running a 425Watt turbo cool from them and i have yet to have any problems with. They do tend to be quite pricy but yet they back up their products with a 5 year warranty. How many parts in your pc case have that kind of warranty?
the first link below is for PCP&C
the second link is for an antec PSU that has PCI express capabilities and a great idea for clearing up the cable clutter

MSI K7n2-delta ilsr mobo
AMD 2800+ 333 @2225 mhz
2x512 matched DDR 2700
WD 74gb 10000rpm sata HD
nVIDIA G-Force 2 Ultra
SB Live Platinum
Kenwood 72X cd-rom
MSI 52X24X52 CDRW

yes pc power and cooling are the best, other good companies are Antec and Enermax
also dont just look at the wattage rating, it wont tell you everything
look at the amps on the +12v rail, you want at least 18
also look at the weight of the ps, heavier ps's have bigger capacitors, coils, and heatsinks
you want a very heavy ps
with lots of cooling and high quality long lasting fans

Which is why I recommended the Thermaltake 420W...18A on the 12V. ;-)
PC Power and Cooling do make good ones, but for what they ask, it's a bit rediculous. Antecs, Thermaltakes, Enermax's, Vantecs, all of those are very good quality, so I don't see a whole lot of point buying the Ferrari of power supplies personally. Not to say buy a piece of crap, but that's one of those components if it works, is reliable, etc. why spend more?
MCSE, MCSA Messaging, baby!

PC Power and Cooling are expensive? I must have lucked out then...I got a 450 watt unit w/dual fans from Compgeeks for $15

reliability is the exact reason that you would buy a PC power and cooling ps
dont think if it as a ferrari
think of it as cadillac
it has all the whizbang features that you want plus a powerful engine and it runs forever or at least till about 165k miles lolyou cant trust ratings on powersupplies these days you have to go for the high quality brand names because you get what you pay for, and you know that you're getting the highest of quality when your ps is backed up by a five year warranty

Thanks for all of the recommendations and yes, what was
I thinking switching the voltage. Hopefully this all works
out, thanks.

LOL, Giggles...
How many power supplies have you bought for yourself and clients? Not picking on you, just curious.

If you have a better source for them that's cheaper, please enlighten me. I love their power supplies.
MCSE, MCSA Messaging, baby!

i have never actually bought one before but i do know that they are the best
remember i never spend more than $100 on any pc partall i have is one 450watt L&C and one 420watt okia
yuck!^(-.-)~~~]>:}>

OK...Giggles, let me get this straight...
You'd spend close to $100 for a power supply that, granted, is a tank, but still a $40 Thermaltake is reliable. But you won't spend more than $100 on any other component...
Sounds to me like misguided priorities.
At least when you overspend on a graphics card or CPU, you often can at least see a difference. If the power supply works, it works.
A better analogy is if you want to get to work, and you spend more than twice the amount of money for a car that looks, drives, handles the same, but is more reliable than an already reliable car when you were on a budget. Ohh, and you know you probably won't be driving that car in another five years anyway.

Something was brought to my attention & I wanna make a correction:
"PC Power and Cooling are expensive? I must have lucked out then...I got a 450 watt unit w/dual fans from Compgeeks for $15"
It wasn't PC Power & Cooling...it was Real PC Power...& it was $16, not $15...lol.
Here it is if you care to have a look:

"You'd spend close to $100 for a power supply that, granted, is a tank, but still a $40 Thermaltake is reliable. But you won't spend more than $100 on any other component..."
NO thats not what i said. I wont spend more than $100 on any componet. I definetly would not spend close to $100 on a powersupply. My okia ps came in a nice case for $30 and my L&C ps came in a fancy smancy xblade case for $90. For that $90 i got 2 80mm led case fans, thumbscrews, a case that i really wanted, and a ps. Plus this was at a local comp shop so i had to pay a little extra, maybe if it had been on newegg i could have gotten it for $60 shipped.
imm sure that your thermaltake psu for $40 is very reliable and that it suits many peoples needs just fine
my only point was that pc power and cooling make the best powersupplies available to the public if you have $200 to spend on one^(-.-)~~~]>:}>

And Rolls-Royce's are the world's finest automobiles...what's your point?
I don't see the value in something so expensive unless it does something more than something that's less expensive. That includes reliability.
So unless the PC Power & Cooling can use the bathroom for me, no thanks. ;-)
MCSE, MCSA Messaging, baby!

it has a five year warranty
can your thermaltake do that?maybe my point really was that you have to buy from good name brands because you cant trust the ratings in generic pus's
i havent quite woke up yet today so my cognitive abilities are struggling^(-.-)~~~]>:}>

Buying from a good name brand...I'm all about that. Thermaltake is good. PC Power & Cooling better... BUT, it's not $60 better! ;-)
MCSE, MCSA Messaging, baby!

sure thats all good and true but one thing which we have all forgotten to mention is the horrible results of a powersupply failure
im talking about loss of motherboard cpu vid card and harddrive and almost everything else that is plugged into iti spent good money i my computer just like everyone else here and i will hate to see when my cheap powersupplies die in who knows when and take everything else with them
that pc power and cooling 5 year warranty is piece of mind
^(-.-)~~~]>:}>

"LOL, Giggles...
How many power supplies have you bought for yourself and clients?"and LOL to you, Heropsycho, remember im 15, i dont have any clients ;) i dont make money working around computers like you do, but i wish i did
^(-.-)~~~]>:}>

OK, so you're saying a good quality power supply like a Thermaltake is gonna fail on you?
So could a PC Power and Cooling. Look, no product is perfect. I'd put money on the PC Power and Cooling to last longer, too, but again, I've also used about 10 Thermaltake power supplies and none of them died. And once again...there is that massive price difference.
My point about how many power supplies you've bought for yourself and clients was simply illustrating that you're arguing about something you have very little experience in almost as if you're an expert in the subject. I'm not gonna get into an argument with an seasoned car mechanic about car parts. ;-)
MCSE, MCSA Messaging, baby!

lol alright youve won another argument but i still make valid points whether or not i have experience with either of those powersupplies
5 year warranty=piece of mind plus you know that pc power and cooling use the highest quality parts
and to make another point i dont have to have personal experience with 2 products to know which one is better as long as i get my information from a reliable source such as maximum pc magazine or from people like jam and skip on this site then the information that i pass on to other people is still valid
you and i both know that the pc power and cooling ps(its more powerful, quieter, and longer lasting, plus it has extra features like cables prewrapped in mesh tubing and sata power connectors) is better than the thermaltake, just maybe not enough to justify the price differencenow the poor guy just asked for ps reccomendations and you gave him yours and i gave him mine
what is painfully obvious to one person might be just painful to the other

LOL, dude, it's cool. I just like to torture you sometimes and beat some sense into you. :-P (I'm kidding.)
MCSE, MCSA Messaging, baby!

I have used a cheap power supply that came with my case 4 years ago and just replaced it with a Okia 420W el cheapo. works fine not overly noisy. My old power supply was only 250 watt,it started making a real racket so I slapped it a few tmes and it was fine again. I think it depends on what kind of a drain you put on it, like multiple hard drives. If anyone has any positive reviews on Okia 420W pleas let me know.

i have an okia powersupply that came in a $30 case
the thing is pure crap
it weighs maybe a pound it has no cooling besides one fan on the back
and it only has 4 molexes totalwhat is painfully obvious to one person might be just painful to the other
