popping sound and smoke from motherboard

hi i recently put together a computer when i started the machine my monitor didnt not get a signal
and the machine ran for a few minutes ut would not boot
then aftera few minutes the cd rom popped open the motherboard began to smoke and then got popping sounds from the motherboard and after that nothing i can see that the motherboard is cracked in a couple places as a result of the popping
anybody know what caused this

hmm... maybe because of overpowering, maybe you should look at the power setting's, maybe you set the watts that the computer is revcing way to high, im not sure i never had that problem..

Something short-circuited inside. The heat generated cracked the MOBO. The MOBO is history. Each component may have been damaged.

You didn't say what brand or type of mobo. I have seen this once on a socket 7 board. I don't remember the exact cause, but I think a K6-2 CPU was installed on a board that only supported single voltage classic Pentiums (non-MMX)...

If this board is using an ATX power supply then you probably used the wrong one of 7 possible ATX pinout designs (yes, their are 7 ATX pinout designs for the MB connector). I discovered this in the exact same manner that you are describing here. In either case, the MB is no longer of any use to you. I would check the manual of the next MB you get to find out the design of the ATX PSU that you need.
