Why do you have to turn it off?
you can't turn it off , you can only chose
between pio4,3,2,1 or standard in the setup
menu.

You have to leave on PIO so that it has something to fall back on if it can't use DMA. How do you know its not running DMA. DMA only runs at like half the advertised speed or less anyway, so maybe your doing DMA 33 and don't realize it.

ATA 100/66 cables have 80 wires. Try counting them or something. Other ATA cables have 40 wires. They are both wide flat cables.
