Solved Pin on CPU broken... Am I doomed??

Specs: Windows 7 64-bit, AMD Athlon II X4 620 2.6GHz / 6gb of ram right now
I wanted to give my computer fans a good cleaning. I saw the screws securing what I now know to be a heatsink to the motherboard and thought it would be easy to clean. As I went to remove the heatsink it came off rather easily and thats when I noticed the CPU was attached to it. After I got the dust out of it i tried to put the heat sink and cpu back on the motherboard like I found it. I tried to line up the pins and push it in but of course it was extremely hard and the pins bent. I straightened them out with some tweezers and kept trying but on my last try one of the pins got really loose and fell off.... after that the heatsink and cpu fit back on the socket on the motherboard, mostly, and i screwed it back down and plugged in the fan and plugged the power cord into the wall but when i hit the power button it starts to boot up for about 10 seconds and the fans come on but then it just turns off and tries to reboot itself again. it would continue to do this unless i unplug it.
what are my options now? is the cpu destroyed?
on a side note. if the cpu is destroyed I was thinking of upgrading. The one i have now is AMD Athlon II X4 620 Quad-core (reading off the side of my machine) my motherboard is a Pegatron M2N78-LA.

To put it bluntly, you botched both the removal & the attempt to reinstall, & you destroyed your CPU in the process. Is this similar to the heatsink you removed?

See the black lever on the side? That is how you you remove it. No screws needed to be touched. I suggest you watch this video:

The CPU you picked out at eBay still has over 2 days to go. I guarantee the price will jump considerably by then. I'm sure it will sell for over $100. The Athlon II you destroyed is rated at 95W, the Phenom II you picked out is rated at 125W. It may or may not work in your system. Make sure the replacement CPU is compatible or you're just going to wind up having even more headaches.

These are your choices:
Motherboard supports the following processor upgrades:
•AMD Athlon X2 (Bt)
•AMD Athlon 64 X2 up to 6000+ (W)
•AMD Phenom Triple-Core up to 8xxx (AM2+) (Toliman)
•AMD Phenom Quad-Core 9xxx series (AM2+) up to 9850 (Agena)

If you try anything else, it may not work, or partially work. Has to do with the BIOS supporting the processor. Most OEM's do not allow for much of an upgrade, if at all.
That processor on ebay is a socket AM3. That is not listed in the specs for your machine.

Agena Core Quad AM2+ are the supported CPU's, the one you list is AM3:

HP have crippled BIOS so do not spend $$$ on an unsupported CPU.

Buying from eBay is not where I would look for a replacement. There are lots of good online stores that stand behind their sales. eBay is a crap shoot, IMO. I only look there if the item I am shopping for is not available elsewhere.

Also, the pin that broke off is probably still in the ZIF socket. If you are replacing the CPU be sure that you remove it without damaging the socket.

How do I know for certain if it is compatible? How do I know how much W it can take? The specifications on the HP website are a little unclear to me. I don't know what I'm looking for in compatibility.
Would you recommend I get the same one that I had?

The specs on the motherboard say it is a AM3 socket and specs on the CPU i have say it is AM3

so now I'm really confused...

#2 response above is listing CPU support from the HP site for that board. The BIOS must support the CPU not just the socket type. The link to the HP listing is below.

HP does not have any BIOS updates listed that would allow any other processors to work. As was stated in #2, any other CPUs may or may not work.

according to the HP website specs for my computer my CPU should be AMD Athalon II X4 620. Where do I find the model number?

#8: I can read the specs to the motherboard on the website. I posted that website. But I obviously don't understand what it means. what does the 9xxx mean? and what does that name in the parenthesis mean? (agena) (toliman)? is that the core ?

I have found this which is a later revision of the Motherboard HP list, is this like yours ie Pegatron written above the memory slots ? Maybe HP have made an error ??

Yes OTH, I am aware of what HP says, but scouring the internet by searching it would appear HP have 3 or 4 revisions of the board and other people have not had the board they thought they had..........

That was the only reason for questioning, personally would just buy the same CPU and put it down to "one of those things" in life which happens !

I agree, I found discrepancies and also found references to at least 2 BIOS updates.

Found a Different list of processors that supposedly work with that board. List is below but I can't verify if it is correct or not.

The chart below is from the link below.

Socket type: AM3
TDP: 95 watt

Cloud - That motherboard is similar but not quite the same. The specs on the website I provided called it a Violet the one you linked says Violet3.

Can you help me decipher this:
•AMD Phenom Quad-Core 9xxx series (AM2+) up to 9850 (Agena)
ok what does the 9xxx mean? also the AM2+ ? is that the socket type? and does the + indicate that it can take AM2 and greater? and (Agena) is that the core type and do I have to find one that references that name?

That means any CPU in the 9000 series up to a 9850.

Bit late for it now, but a CPU is a ZIFF component, meaning (Zero-insertion Force), for anybody in future, it should glide into the socket provided you match the notch and pins up correctly.

And one typical mistake people make is (as stupid as it sounds) forgetting to lift the latch, and it sounds like thats what happened in your case... it came out fine whilst locked, but wouldnt go back in, even with undue physical effort.

Glenn, if you read the original post carefully you would understand that the heat sink was stuck to the CPU. There is no option to move the lever at that point because the heat sink would be blocking the travel of the lever.

Gently twisting on the heat sink is the method that may release the heat sink from the CPU without the possibility of extracting the CPU without releasing the lever. The CPU should be warm at that point, if possible.

You are correct that Britt did not release the locking lever when attempting to re-insert. However, he couldn't do that with the heat sink attached.
