Comment: I very much like AMD CPU's. My dad let me choose everything i wanted and i choose a 1800+. My brother wanted a pentium 4, so my dad got two computers, one with a athlon xp 1800+ and another with a P4 1.6ghz. Now my brother boasts that his computer is faster. We have the same amount of ram (256). I guess it's the fact that mine is 1.53ghz and his is 1.6ghz. I want to overclock my 1800+ to 1.6 or more. I have tried o/c already and the prospects look good. i get a max of 1740mhz out of it. Should i overclock it, keeping in mind that i only use the fan that came with my 1800+. What's the recommended o/c for this cpu?

Reply: (edit)if i was you i wouldnt overclock it... we all know AMD is superior to Intel and we also know that the 1800+ ranks faster speeds than the 1.8 and even the 2.0 p4 in some cases. You probably just have more in your startup file. To stop some of those unnecessary startup items go to the run box and type in msconfig, click on the startup tab and decide what you need and what you dont need. If startup time bothers you you can always hibernate your computer. If you dont know already, it will shut down your whole computer and windows keeps an image of whatever you were doing on your hard drive. If your brother is really on your case about how much "faster" his computer is than yours you can hit him with these: 1) AMD doesn't lie about speeds and 2) AMD doesn't constantly push up their frequencys, they work on architecture for better processing which means that even though your processor frequency is 1.53, it will easily outperform a intel processor which clocks at 1.8.IF you really want to OC it, get a nice hsf... thats all:) goodluck

Reply: (edit)Your brother can overclock his 1.6GHZ P4 to 2.44GHZ and blow yours out of the water...Your pathetic 1800+ won't even reach 2GHZ...so much for being faster.

Reply: (edit)tell me Overclocker... exactly how is his brother gonna change the speed of the intel? the 1.6Ghz chip of pentium is locked and his bro can only speed up the bus for overclocking. if he was to put his fsb in a speed enabling the pentium to go at 2.4Ghz, what he would get is an extra crispy comp... AMD rules, u got the better dead man.

Reply: (edit)It is possible to get a P4 1.6 to 2.44, as long as it is a Northwood. P4 1.6 Northwoods are the modern day Celeron 300A in terms of overclockability. A buddy has his 1.6 running stable at 2.4, but he has got it up to 2.612, but it crashed every 10 minutes, and this is only air cooled, with stock fan. He just has very good circulation through his case. You can overclock your 1800+ if you want to, but be prepared for the consequences if you screw it up. Is having more Mhz than your brother worth having no computer at all?

Reply: (edit)dude intel sucks, why buy a cpu of intel that costs 3times the price of an athlon and runs 20%slower.... intel is now on the 0.13micron and AMD is still on 0.18micron but the 2.0GHz of intel is as fast as an 2000+ of AMD that runs on +- 1800Mhz AND IS 0.18micron so intel sucks!!! AMD rulezzz glenn

Reply: (edit)AnN, Intel P4's don't "just" fry. You have them confused with the Athlon XP's, witch get extra crispy all the time, even without overclocking. Intel rules, he got the better deal, man.

Reply: (edit)Remember how Sonic was faster than Mario, Sega did great for a while, Sega ****ed up, and now Nintendo owns them, and Sony is kicking thier rear. Sonic=AMD Mario=Intel ? = ? will rule! I bet you Intel will own AMD some day, and then another company will come in and destroy both of them, just like Sony....history repeat yourself.

Reply: (edit)there are so mutch good things about AMD and none of intel well the p3 are good but p4 sucks! i have a lot of friend and only 5% of them has intel cpu's cuz they got it from their parents or they just don't know a lot about pc's, its as clear as water that the cpu's of AMD are a lot better, the only problem is that they produce a lot of heat but i don't care about that factor.... AMD rulezz and AMD owns intel...

Reply: (edit)AMD sucks!!! Intel rules!!! Intel rules with 533MHZ Bus speed!!! NO Athlon XP can beat that!!! Intel P4's don't heat up!!! Intel is faster and "now" doesn't lie about CPU speeds!!! With AMD you'll spend as much money as the Intel because you'll be buying expensive fans just to cool the bloody thing down!!! Hey AMD, Intel rules!!!

Reply: (edit)What a SAD! SAD! SAD! argument, who cares about chip manufacturers. Stop being sooo religious about them, do you work for Intel or AMD? Do you know what AMD stands for? See, who cares? AMD are already increasing prices, have YOU seen the price of a 2600+?????? Soon intel will be the cheaper CPU.. then lets see how many sad people write "AMD rulez" at the bottom of their message. Reply: (edit)Because I don't have to write a low level algorithm for flowers by the 8th of October. And more to the point, where I work, there are only two PCs with intel chips, out of 6000! (There are no AMD, they have been in so little contact with developers, their chips are apalling) So, thats why I don't talk about flowers. Joni

Reply: (edit)Wait a sec... You and your bro got your own PC's just because you had conflicted opinions about which was faster? Im sorry, that is lame. Why didnt you just get daddy to buy one PC that you both agreed on. And I agree with Joni, this is a very sad opinionated arguement that is rendered awful by "Rulezzz/Suckzzz" posts. -Chris

Reply: (edit)chris M: the fact that craig and his brother both have computers is hardly your consern, go and cry about it to someone who cares about what YOU haven't got. every one else: when i created life, the universe and everything, i used both amd and intell cpu's, on the same motherbord as well. but then i am god, so i have what i like. anyway, where was i..... oh yes, i used to be like you lot, i'd force my will on to everyone, shun anyone who eat's pork etc. but in the end, i just ended up loosing all my frends, so i now just take hapeness in the fact that peaple eat (not like that buda bloke, who starved himself just to spite me). amd? intel? what dus it matter, more expensive dusn't always mean better quality, bigger numbers don't always mean faster. get what you like, plug it in, and play games/ watch porn. ....thats why i created it. yours god

Reply: (edit)Look "god" you obviously read between the lines here... If they each have their own PC's that is fine, I have NO problems with that. "My dad let me choose everything i wanted and i choose a 1800+. My brother wanted a pentium 4, so my dad got two computers" Maybe I am wrong, but looks like 2 Pc's were bought just to support both of their opinions. If I am wrong, I apologise. God, I have obviously offended you, I'm not entirely sure how, but sorry. -Chris

Reply: (edit)For a While I used to think that AMD Was the Best on the CPU Chip Industry. I know that AMD Uses the Same Technology that Apple Computers use! AMD Processors are R.I.S.K Processors they can Process double the data that a Intel chip can. They work much faster that the ones from intel. I know that AMD wich stands for "Advance Micro Devices" Just for those of you that don't know is alot cheaper but let me tell you that the people at Intel are very smart! Intel Chips like the Pentium 3 and the Pentium 4 are so cool you know why? You can run them with out a Heatsink and Fan! If you do that with a AMD Chip it will fry on half a sec. Intel has been using that technology since 2 Years ago. Also I like now Intel more because of the Northwood Chip a nice cheap Processor with lots of Overclock Pontetial! Do you Study Peple Read, Read, Read! But Like every one is saying! Just go with what ever you like. It's your money your spending not mine!
