Comment:

I was just wondering if it is possible to overclock a pentium mmx 233 to higher speeds, the multiplier is set to 3.5x, fsb to 66mhz, and voltage to 2.8v.
My motherboard supports fsb up to 75/83mhz, but I don't know any cpu's socket 7 with that speed. Also if I use the 75/83mhz speed, I have to change the pci clock from clk/2 to 33mhz; the max voltage for the cpu is 3.5v (2.5, 2.8, 2.9, 3.2, 3.5). There are no cpu options in the bios, everything is done by jumpers, so don't say anything about the bios.

Your limiting factor will be your RAM, which is probably designed for 66MHz. It should handle 75MHz, but I doubt it'll take 83MHz...it's worth a shot though. Here's a few suggestions:

3.5 x 83MHz = 290.5MHz, set PCI at 33MHz. A CPU voltage increase "may" be necessary. If you don't have an option for 3.0v, 2.9v is your only other choice. I would NOT trying recommend 3.2v

3.5 x 75MHz = 262.5MHz, try the PCI at /2. That would put it at 37.5MHz which is generally the safe max...if you wanna play it safe, set it to 33MHz. CPU voltage increase probably won't be necessary.

Your system will benefit more if you increase your memory as opposed to the mhz you hope to gain from overclocking.

Both AMD and Cyrix manufactured CPU's with
a higher FSB, you need to consult the MoBo
Manual for CPU compatibility, probably
300mhz is around the max without O/C, they
can be sourced thru EBAY.

One other thing to mention is the motherboard chipset. Most of the older socket 7 chipset's would only cache 64MB of RAM, so it'd be best not to exceed that amount.

Also, the AMD K6-2 interprets the 2x multiplier as 6x. So you could run a 400MHz CPU (6 x 66), a 450 (6 x 75) or even a 500 (6 x 83). If you can find a K6-3, the RAM/cache limit isn't a factor because the CPU has onchip cache.

A socket7 board with a PCI lock - I'm impressed!

Besides that I think everything is already said. Unless you still have questions!

Just out of interest - DataX what
motherboard are you using?

Hope it all goes well!

By the way, I want to thank jam for the info, after oferclocking my cpu to 266mhz, my computer booted in half the time, and everything, I mean everything speeded up.

I did all my learning (& made all my mistakes) on those early socket 7 boards. Thanks for the feedback.
