just curious here. is a intel pentium dualcore extreme 3.2ghz better than a pentium dualcore 2.2ghz. i heard the intel pentium extreme is really a pentium d processor.can anyone clear this up thanks

Pentium Dual Core CPUs are Pentiums in name only. They are actually stripped down versions of the Core 2 Duo & they overclock like mad.
The Pentium Extremes are based on the Pentium D which are in turn based on the P4.
Check this article about the Pentium Dual core from a year ago...

thanks again jam.i see. my mate has a spare intel pentium E2200 dual core processor 2.2ghz. he said i can have if i want it. just wondering will it be worth my while installing it and taking out this p.4 3.2ghz one. he said the E2200 will run alot cooler for starters ?

If your board supports it, grab it & overclock it! Yes, it will run much cooler & it should perform better too.

cheers jam. it will work on my motherboard will install it tomorrow or the next day when i get it off him.

I hate to sound like a broken record, but I still have my doubts that your NF4 board will take a Pentium Dual Core.
I'm 95% certain that NF4 Intel Edition boards are limited to Netburst processors (P4, PD, PEE). The Pentium Dual Core is Core 2-based.
Here's a CPU support list for nForce4 SLI-based boards by Gigabyte:
http://www.giga-byte.com/Support/Mo...
Celeron Ds, P4s, PDs, and older PEEs are supported, but Pentium Dual Cores are not.
CPU support lists from Asus show the same thing.
I'm certain that the dudes @ Dell thought you were talking about the Pentium D when you asked them about dual core support.

cheers jackbomb. well i did stress the point to dell that its a pentium dual core E2200 2.2ghz processor that i wanted to install and he said hang on while i check the compatability. when he came back he said the dual core E2200 would be compatable but he was wondering why i wanted to go for that older processor so i said to him that the heat coming from the p.4 3.2ghz processor was too much and i wanted a cooler cpu. well my mate has one to give me for nothing but i dont want to go through the hastle of removing the processor now just incase. dell are as enlightened as a spanner
i'm going to d/l everest and check something here.
this is what i just received after been told by tech support that it was compatable on the phone earlier.Dear Mr. Traynor,
Thank you for contacting Dell XPS Hardware E-Support.
I have reviewed your email and understand that you want to know whether the Intel Pentium Dual-Core E2200 2.2GHz, Socket LGA775, 1MB, 800MHz processor would be supported by the motherboard installed on your XPS 600 computer.
Please note that internal components of Dell systems are customized and build to meet different needs. The system motherboards are also uniquely built and we have special codes for all the internal parts of the system.
Since, we recognize parts by our internal code, I will not be able to answer the query regarding the Pentium Dual-Core E2200 processor. However, if you wish to upgrade the processor, I can only inform you that the XPS 600 motherboard support Smithfield 8XX series and Extreme Edition (dual-core) processors. To check out the processor's that are supported by your system, please check the picture that I have included as attachment.
Unfortunately, Dell’s Technical Support department only provides warranty service, and as a result, we do not have information in regards to product details and pricing of the parts needed for your system. i e-mailed them after i heard it might not work. wish they would make up their mind

ok i hope this is my final post. i just rang dell technical support again and told them straight out will the e2200 2.2ghz processor work on my motherboard and he connected remotely to my pc and checked everything and said it is FULLY compatable with it. he read the e2200 dual core processor information i gave him back to me and confirmed it is definatly compatable. so i hope he's not bulls---ting me. as you said jackbomb that your 95% sure it was not compatable has me worried. but i'll sure as hell know when i install it. lol thanks for the help jam and jackbomb will let you know to see if it actually works.

Let us know how it goes.
I'm kinda curious now...the dude @ dell seems confident. :PHomebuilt 1080p Projector:

will do jackbomb. i will drive up to him thursday and pick it up from him. will install it then. has me curious as well now lol.

this is getting stranger and stranger. i was onto a tech guy online and he said my motherboard will run a core 2 duo. i have this e2200 dual core here now my friend gave me will install it after i find out a bit more on this. can you look at this pdf file scroll down near the bottom to conroe. up the top it says nvidia nforce4 x16 sli intel motherboard and it says the conroe is supported. http://www.nvidia.com/content/nforc...
LOL dell just rang me asking how i am getting on and he said that the processor i already have in the pc is a pentium 4 3.2ghz dual core processor and its a very good one lol how do these people call themselfs technicians.

" up the top it says nvidia nforce4 x16 sli intel motherboard and it says the conroe is supported."
Yes, but according to support.dell.com, your computer uses the older nForce 4 SLI, not the nForce 4 SLI X16.
http://support.dell.com/support/edo...
The plain old NF4 SLI only supports the P4 and PD CPUs, according to nvidia's chart.
"how do these people call themselfs technicians."
No clue. :P
The dude @ Dell probably got mixed up with hyper-threading.Homebuilt 1080p Projector:

well i just got back online. i had to wait till the cable broadband upgrade was done. anyway i installed the dualcore processor e-2200 2.2ghz and the pc turns on but there is a solid amber light showing on the desktop but nothing else monitor will not turn on and windows will not load. so i stuck the p4 processor back in. seems like it's not compatable even though dell says it is. or it might need an upgraded bios. by the way i have a nforce4 x16-sli intel.

Try upgrade the bios, if it dosent work then..... Dell is stuuuupid, and we shall never doubt jackbomb ever again.

was on dell's site and the latest bios
version is from 2006 LOL i already have that one installed. ah well i tried but no cigar. at this time dell phoned and said they cancelled my account regarding this problem.all they had to say the first time to me was NO your motherboard is not compatable. would have saved me the bother of installing and reinstalling the cpu's. anyway thanks for all the help. cheers
this is what it say's from everest ultimate:
motherboard name dell xps 600
motherboard chipset:nforce4-sli-x16-intel
chipset northbridge:nvidia nforce4-sli-x16-intel edition(c19)
southbridge:nvidia nforce4 sli (ck8-04)

well this is just a reply to let you know that a dell supervisor rang me and said that they had a technical group working on the architecture of my system during the week (if you beleive that )and said to me that the e2200 dual core is not compatable and are very sorry for the wrong advise i was given and the technicians were cautioned on this (if you beleive that as well lol) and thats it after all this time. jackbomb was right all along. a piece of advice to anyone thinking of buying a dell pc is DONT as you will seriously regret it. cheers "all" again for the help which you gave me on this. problem
