I am sure this question has been asked but i could not find a post about it anywhere. What is the differnece between A pentium d and core 2 duo?? Is the core 2 duo just a cooler, more engery efficent version of the D? I know they are both dual cores. And i also know there cores are differnt. And would any of these be the way to go for games? or just go with a higher ghz p4? Thanks

According to Intel, the Core2 is "a complete redesign. The engineers took elements from the current Pentium D NetBurst architecture and added ingredients that made the Pentium M and Core Duo mobile processors successful, and voilá: The Core2 micro-architecture was born." (clipped from a Tom's Hardware article)

Clock speed means nothing these days. The Core2 Duo beats all previous P4 models & anything AMD currently has to offer, even if they run at a higher clock speed. Here's a CPU comparison chart...in red is the 2.66GHz Core2 Conroe vs the 3.6GHz Pentium D 960. The Core2 beats it by a substantial margin.

That's not entirely true. Though clock speed comparison between architectures means little, it still denotes the most basic measure of performance when comparing it to the same or similar core. The fastest Core 2 is clocked at 2.93Ghz and the slowest is 1.6 or so. And though things like manufacturing process and cache sizes also influence performance, clock speed is still a large factor in the performance of a chip.

^^^ LOL Ditto.

You look at the preformance of the Core 2 Duo 6300 clocked at 1.86ghz and it outpreforms the Pentium D 930 3ghz in all areas. that's a 1140ghz diff.

Adam I think you need to do some rading in benchmarks. cause the days of the ghz = faster is over. Sun microsystems is making a 1.1ghz server quad-core processor due out early 2007 that will smoke any Intel or AMD server quad-core out on the market today.

AMD Athlon 64 X2 4600+ OC 2.7ghz
2GB Dual Channel DDR 3200
Nvidia 7900GT
SATA II 2x 300gig 7200rpm 16mb cache RAID-0
Gigabyte Nforce 4 SLI
