OS: Windows XP SP2
CPU/Ram: Pentium D 805 2.66 / 2gb
Product: Self Build

Hi There,

I am brand spanking new to this overclocking lark and have heard that my processor is fairly overclockable, I have read lots of advice/post etc and guides from Toms Hardware but no matter what I do I still can't get it to work properly (Well at all tbh)

I have Windows XP SP2
2gb PC2-5300 DDR2 667mhz RAM
ASUS P5VDC-X Motherboard (AMIBIOS Version 0303)
Pentium D 805 2.66
160gb HDD, DVD etc

I don't seem to have all of the settings I need in the bios to change and i have things like Hyper Threading and such enabled when I don't know if i should have.

I have checked various setting through CPU-Z but can't seem to get anywhere!

Please can someone help this doofus out???!!!

Many thanks

Sparx

Well considering Pentium D's don't have Hyper Threading you should turn it off.

Your board isn't a good one for overclocking. You *should* be able to jack it up somewhat, but without voltage adjustments, your results will be limited.

Under Advanced > JumperFree config, set AI Overclock to Manual...you will then be able to increase the CPU Freq by using the + or - keys.

You will also have to lower the speed of your RAM to run it in sync with the CPU. Set the DRAM Frequency to Manual, then change the frequency to 266MHz or DDR533 (I'm not sure what choices you have).

Lock the PCI at 33MHz, the AGP at 66MHz & the PCI-e at 100MHz. Disable any Spread Spectrum settings (if they're available).

Once you've done all the above, start raising the CPU freq a little at a time. Default is 266MHz...try it at 275MHz, save your setting changes, then reboot & test your system for stability. If it seems OK, reboot, go back into the BIOS & add 10MHz more to the CPU freq (there's no need to change any other settings). Once again, save the changes, reboot & test your system for stability. Continue like this until your system becomes unstable, then back it off to the last stable settings.

Do you know how to recover if you over-overclock & your system becomes unbootable?

I believe the Pentium D 805 runs default of 533Mhz FSB (133x4)? So shouldn't he begin with 133Mhz FSB default?

Yup, you're right. I got my CPU's mixed up.

Here's the corrections:

"Set the DRAM Frequency to Manual, then change the frequency to 133MHz or DDR266 (I'm not sure what choices you have)."

"....start raising the CPU freq a little at a time. Default is 133MHz...try it at 145MHz, save your setting changes, then reboot & test your system for stability."

Cool, thanks guys, i'll give it a go and let you know how i get on!!

When ive tried it before and its been unbootable i've just taken the battery out out and then put it back in and its been ok, but if there is a better way i'm all ears as they say!

Well, i tried that but to no avail, it seems whenever i try to change any of the DRAM settings the system wont boot, i did manage to clock it to 145 without changing any memory settings but i then had a blue screen of death and then i did manage to get windows to start but it crashed shortly after.

Also, i dont know if it relates but when i overclock my 2048mb memory went down to 1536mb?

Is it just the board or is my memory screwed?

its fine now back to 2048 with my clocking back to standard

What exactly are you trying to change? Have you ever tested the RAM with memtest86?

Your CPU freq & RAM freq should run in sync, so regardless of the fact that you have DDR2-667 RAM, it should be underclocked to DDR266 (if possible). Then when you overclock the system, the RAM freq will stay in step with the CPU freq.

If you had a decent motherboard, you'd be able to OC the crap out of that D805!

Hey Jam,

Thanks again, I'll give the memtest86 a go, what motherboard would you recommend?

As mentioned I'm a bit of a noob at this, preferably could do with being as cheap as possible but would be good to know what I should be looking for Motherboard wise!

Cheers

Hi guys,

I was looking at this motherboard ASUS P5W DH Deluxe SKT 775 dual-core Core2Duo Conroe ready Crossfire 8channel audio ATX

Would this be a good choice? to be honest its £100 and thats a bit more than I was looking to pay (so any cheaper alternatives would be great!) but if needs must!!

Many thanks
