If you are like me, I buy the cpu and build the computer around it. So the motherboard is the second purchase. But I would pick the 478 pin 3.0 ghz 800fsb northwood if you can still locate one.
Then pick a good 800fsb motherboard to run it.
Right now the p4 3.0 prescotts are in the $185 range @ zzf. Prescotts are ok but have cooling issues when overclocking.
Happy hunting.

LMAO.........Socket 478. While yer at it get yourself an AGP video card and some good old fashioned DDR ram. If he's buying new.......why go old?

why not? they are not expensive you can use existing hardware they overclock well, more bang for the buck. I'm thinking of more a buget rig, than a killer one.

If you are new to this and want more bang for the buck, get an athlon 64. They are much better for games, and lag only slightly behind intel when it comes to encoding.

Just go out and get a socket LGA775 intel 945 64bit/32bit motherboard and go out and grab either a Pentium 4 531 EM64T 1mb cache or for a little more a Pentium 4 630 EM64T 2mb cache. Both cpu's can support 64bit.

Yeah avoid any 32bit motherboard or processors seeing as AMD and Intel are fasing them out by the end of 2006.

If you are getting a new pc, then 64bit is the way to go, because you will be able to upgrade to windows XP 64bit or Windows Vista 64bit in the future.

I have a Pentium 4 3.2 Ghz Extreme Edition I got off ebay for 149.99 starting bid because the guy left some letters out in the auction title. So I've built a computer out of that and I don't know very much about overclocking. I've only raised the value in bios to 225 and it is giving me 3.6ghz. I don't know anything about the voltages or whatever. Do I have to or am I suppose to mess with voltage settings. Can anyone help?
