I like to leave my computer on to download things on my cable connection. Is it recommended that i not leave my computer on as much (because it would shorten the CPU lifespan)? Or does how long i leave my computer on not matter?
I use athlon 1800xp
My last athlon was a 1gig tbird. That processor died on me in 8 months time. I figured it was because i overused it. (left computer on for 3-4 days at times)
One more question:
My last pc, the 1gig tbird, died on me. I come one one evening and the computer just didn't turn on(no display). What could have went wrong?

i never turn mine off...I use sleep mode BUT I would suggest a good firewall be in place.I dont think you"overused" it chances are it was something else...heat? OC? and how do you know it was the chip and not some other part that kicked the bucket??

To be honest, i have no clue what died.
I did replace the motherboard and the processor and the computer is working fine.
So between the motherboard and the processor is what is not functioning.

Just about the only other thing besides heat that can destroy a computer is voltage surges. Get a good UPS and make sure the processor is properly cooled, the computer should run for years. I have a 200 MHZ Pentuim Pro server at work that has been running 24 hours a day for over 5 years, with no problems.

Summary: You're right ... it is pretty hard to damage a P4 (though not impossible). When you replaced the CPU did you (1) clean off all the remains of the original thermal pad, and (2) apply a thin applicatio...
