This question might seem pretty stupid, but i'll ask it anyway. I found this DVD burning drive in office depot for $60. However, it is white and my system is entirely black. Is there anyway i could paint or spraypaint it black or anything?

If you have to ask, then you probably wont like the results. Just order a black one!

actually its really no problem

simply go to the store and pick up a can of black spray paint for plastics
i use krylon fusion for plastics
it works great

then remove the front faceplate of your drive, usually there are some tabs that are holding it in place just push em inward and pull the faceplate out
now paint it

but for the tray cover i would recoomend wrapping everywhere around it carefully with tapeand then spray painting it, same goes for the buttons

make sure to let everything dry and dont touch it! i have spray painted an entire case before and it turned out fine, this is really not that hard to do

In addition to giggles post, I would suggest that instead of using paint for plastics, get a can of "vinyl dye" spray paint. You can get them at most major auto parts stores. Regular spray paint will work, of course, but can get messy/runny and adds a thickness that might make things (door/buttons) stick/jam. Vinyl dye absorbs into the plastic and "infuse" with it to give a "oem look". Remember to remove the eject button and paint that separately. As for the led light window, cover it with some vaseline, using a toothpick and apply paint over it...it will be easy to remove once the paint is set. Also, use light, thin layers when applying the paint.

Don't paint it. Use VINYL DYE. You'll all appreciate this link, methinks!

Is the added cost and time spent voiding your warranty worth it?

Order a black one and keep the warranty!

whats the point of buying a new one just to get some stupid warranty you're never going to use?! ive painted 2 cd-rom drives, 3 floppy drives, zip drive, all black. its easy. just follow the directions on the paint can and you can use normal gloss black for cars or whatever. it turns out nicely but let it sit for 24hrs to dry or else it will be sticky and soft. like what giggles said, just push out the tabs but with a flat head scew driver. im sure you will have fun. later

ooops, my bad

you can still paint it tho, its really not that hard, i mean compared to something like installing a raid array painting a cd drive is nothing and it would save you some money cuz you could buy the cheaper one and paint it

Lol, installing a raid array is easy.

The worst par of building a mchien (in my opinion) is puttingt the heatsink on the cpu, and clamping it down. It always worries me that I will crack or damage the die!
