What seems to be the problem with the Asus heatpipe setup?

The vast majority of people overclock using air cooling & do quite well, especially with a C2D / P35 setup. IMO, watercooling is a waste of money...the only time it's 'necessary' is for extreme overclocking or for when an extremely quiet system is desired. I could be wrong but don't think the Asus heatpipe system is designed to accept a fan. I suppose one could somehow be positioned to cool the chipset, but if the case is adequately cooled, it probably wouldn't be necessary.

Get a large but Silent 120mm fan and use some cable ties, strap it down and blow air over them, cheaper than any Asus supplied fan you will get and much more effective!
