considering your getting a barebones system, go for an AMD (more bang for the buck)

I have been reading the Win2000 forum on thin site and i read about many different Blue screens of death. EVERY SYSTEM had an AMD CPU in it. I have used AMDs since my first 200mhz K6. The K6's were stable. When i got my Athalon it BSODed almost everyday. They often have random unexplained problems. Tyme is money so if you don't like to reboot lots or reformat, then get a Pentium!

Advantages of P4. Currently the fastest processor, regardless of how you measure it, is the Pentium 4 2.8 ghz. It is crazily fast (and tom's hardware got it overclocked to 3.1ghz!)

Advantages of AMD. You won't be so broke you can't aford to eat like you would be if you buy the 2.8ghz Pentium4 ($500+ for the CPU!)

Really though, AMD is better and cheaper. Intel is a great chip too, but I would only buy one of the 2.8 ghz ones (if only I could afford it) The NEW INTELS are looking to be very dominant after Christmas, when the Hammer CPU from AMD comes out. Then the battle will resume.

It's a never ending race. Buy what you want to afford. If you want a good deal get an Athlon XP.

C'mon Matt, you don't get blue screens just because you're running an AMD CPU...LMAO!That's completely ridiculous & I'm surprised no one else called you on that!!

Are you the same Matt that's claimed to be a computer "Tech" for over 10 years? If so, you must not be a very good one...LOL!

Well so far...my 1st system was amd, i had amd forever. but this time i got myself P4 2.2 , tell you wat it's pain in the a**!
But when i got it to run and overclock it to almost 3ghz with no problem, no lock ups no blue screen, it runs like i never expect it to.
with this system, i am using it to do video editing and it's been a great system i have never have.
good luck

pentium 4 1.6a ghz($135)will overclock to 2.41 ghz

Make sure you get a good motherboard that u can overclock through the bios like mine Which is a ASUS p4s533 with the 533 mhz frontside bus.
Im using the 2.0a ghz ($180) which a stands for 512 cache which is what u need for extreme overclocking mine will overclock to 2.8ghz

Hey Matt with the BSODs . . .

I've been building ATHlon computers (NOT Athalon) for years - tons of them. For professional offices, for home use, and yes, even for gamers. Even overclocked a few of them. But BSODs have *NEVER* been an issue with me. Nine times out of ten, such problems arise by incorrect settings, incorrect hardware installations, incompatible hardware such as mobo/mem, or because the person working on the machine - didn't have a clue (often associated with a reading disability and/or lack of being able to follow directions as well)

Some of my clients have had their systems running for two years and longer - without *ANY* BSOD that was cause by the processor. Lack of maintenance, improper handling of the system, or overheating due to interior crud maybe - but not because the processor simply caused such a fault. Get real, will 'ya?

If you're for real with your post . . .
Then you probably shouldn't be working on any computers, regardless if AMD or P4 systems. What a joke . . .

Hey Intel, *A*M*D* *R*U*L*E*Z*!*

I usually wouldn't recommend an Athlon XP but after reading up on the 2400+ I really want one. At 2GHZ and only $199 that actually sounds like a good bang for the buck.

I bought a HP with an AMD XP processor in it
and it booted me a couple of times. Took it back for full refund. Guess it was the CPU's fault. Now im gonna build my own computer using Intel motherboard and CPU.

Intel RULEZ !

O give me a break. Who cares how I spell! I am sure that you all have failed a spelling test in ur day. I was simply stating my opinion trying to help Cantholdmd with his question. No I was not the tech that was boasting about being in the field for 10 years. I have been doing tech support for 4 years now. It's obvious that I am wasting my tyme since some of you seem to be very closed minded when it comes to Intel VS AMD.

I have been working on PCs for years... I have seen many geeks, dorks, nerds, and retards doing the same. I have noticed the only people to argue an opinion are the totally geeked out NERDS(with no common sense)! They are both really good processors. AMD is just more economical and P4s win the popularity contest. I'm about to upgrade from a AMD K6-2 500 to an Athlon XP 2100 for $100. (Sell the old for a good price and buy the new with the same money) Been using this concept for years!

(I'm not calling anybody at this post names) Just an opinion!!!
Happy Computing!!!!!!!! 8>)

Thomas has a good point. These days the processor isn't the make or break point like it was a couple of years ago. Currently if you want a fast system you have to pay more attention to RAM speeds, and especially hard disk speeds. My current PC is a PIII 450MHz and at the time I could justify it by the increased speed. I am currently looking at an upgrade and I think that I will go with the AMD simply because of the good value and spend the extra money on faster/more ram and faster hard disks. I think that this combination will keep you happier for a longer time. The other thing that I like is the new amd processors should be supported for a long time. Why not buy a cheap one now and upgrade it in a year to double your speed for next to nothing. Just an idea for those on a budget.
