Hi I have just built my own system based on a P4 1.6, according to the bios the idle temp is 41c with case fans on. Is this high for a P4, Im used to P3 running at mid 30s

No, i belive that your processor's heat is perfectly normal. i myself own a P4 1.5, and it runs 33-38*C idle and 35-43*C full load. since my pc is right next to my air conditioner, it runs cooler.
Because your processor is at a higher clock speed, it is normal that it is running also at a higher temp.
Your processor is normal.

Phil, P4's run cooler than AMD's and I think your idle temp should be lower. I have a P4 1.9 with an MSI board and idle cpu temp is around 18c estimated by sisoft sandra. After 45 minutes of heavy use (master of the skies red ace) I'm around 30c. I'm running two internal fans, chipset fan and vid fan. Check out Intels site for heat specs and additional info.

Sisoft isn't as reliable i found as MBM5, mother moniter 5 . My 1.5 runs at 89 f idle, and about 93 loaded
