I have my P4 2.26 processor and Ive been underclocking it because of my motherboard wont let be put the mhz past 400 (which my processor is 533mhz) so I had no cooling issues. But since I just ordered a new mobo so that I can run my processor at full speed I was wondering if I was suppose to put it on. I never put thermal paste on a pentium 4. I have for many AMD chips. It is weird the P4 has this weird metal plate over the chip with a little whole. That made me wonder if I should put it on. Can anyone help me?

cover all the metal of the p4 with a thin coat of paste. That hole is only there for pressure equalization during manufacturing and has no purpose at this point.

You should always use some sort of thermal material when installing a HSF...ALWAYS!

If you are using Intel Retail Pack, the heatsink comes with thermal transfer material laminated in that black "tin foil" on the bottom of the heatsink.
Otherwise, like jam and johnoh said thermal paste is a must.
