Okay, all I need is a little advice in overclocking my 2.4 Ghz (800 FSB) Northwood. (D1 revision)

I am not a "hardcore" overclocker, but now I have a Zalman 7000AlCu cooler with Arctic Silver 5, and 1Gb of Geil DDR500 memory, I would like to get somewhere near 3.0Ghz.

I know this can be done, and much higher overclocks are possible with better cooling.
Naturally, for a laugh, I put it at 250FSB straight away, needless to day, this did not work. biggrin.gif

Most importantly, my default vCore is 1.58V. I gather this is bad...so can one of you guys please tell me:
- how high is it "safe" to go on the vCore with this kind of cooling?
( I don't want to significantly shorten the processor's life)
- how high am I likely to need to go to approach 3.0Ghz?
- is my Thermaltake 420W PSU good enough? (http://www.thermaltake.com/purepower/w00089.htm)

Thanks in advance

I have the exact same processor as you and a similar cpu cooler (specs are in my sig)

I have had my 2.4 at 3.0 for 6 months and it hasn't caused my computer to crash once.
I could have pushed it even more but my memory is holding me back. Since you have DDR500 memory you might be able to reach 3.2 or 3.4. (You SHOULD have no problem with getting 3.0 at least)

I had to increase the voltage to 1.7 to obtain this overclock though. My temps still only reach about 45-50 celcius when under heavy load.

Jumping right to 250FSB (1000 effective) wasn't a good idea. Increase the fsb 5 Mhz at a time until the system becomes unstable and then increase the voltage a little bit.
Also make sure you lock the pci/agp speeds at 33/66 or you wont get very far. Here is a screenshot settings.

I have a P4 2.6 Northwood, OC'd to just over 3.0 (FSB set to 231). My vcore is set to 1.725 ... no stability problems, no heat problems with Cooler Master Aero 7 HSF.
