Comment:

I just purshased a P4 dual core 3ghz 2mb cache 800mhz cpu. [Intel PD 930 DC LGA775]. My motherboard is a Intel D945GNT. After installing intel(R) desktop utilities it says that my cpu is idling at between 60-65 degrees celcius. How is this possible???? When I am not running any programs. In addition i get a warning message that its passed a safety zone which i assume is 65 C. Can anyone explain this to me. Thank you

Poor air flow, heatsink seated wrong these are just some of the things that can be causing it. If all you have is the Intel stock fan in there and nothing else then you are going to reach it those temps very fast. When using lntel stock fan you are going to need more cooling then that.

I'd suggest you throw in a front 120mm intake fan and a back 80mm exhaust fan or 120mm fan if your case supports it in the back.

Ive been having the same problem with my P4 and mine was running idle at around the same temps. It also use to hit 70 - 80c when running a game which would reboot my computer (very annoying if playing online games).

So like the guy above said, it would be best to get rid of the stock heatsink and splash out on a decent one. Then buy a few exhaust fans just to keep it that little bit cooler.

I dont no if the temperatures im running at now are still good for my CPU but at idle its around 40-43 and i peak at about 65c when running a game.

You are in normal range for a prescott pentium 4. Prescott cpus were the worst processors intel made in terms of cpu heat. the Ceder mill pentium 4 does a much better job.

On my pentium d 805 (which is basically 2 prescotts on one chip) i get 65*c max load both cores. And that is at 4ghz. I use a freezer 7 pro. Two 120mm exhaust fans sit right next to the heatsink.
