Hi,
I am really confused after reading the comments. I am going to buy a new system and at the present moment i can't make out whether to go 4 amd 2600+(with barton core) OR P4 2.6 Or P4 2.6HT..I can't find good benchmarks comparing all of them and what motherboard and fan will go best with them ..If you guys can help solve the problem for me..
Thanks

Put it this way, I have an Athlon Xp 2000+ overclocked at 2.09 GHz, and in benchmarks it knocks the socks off of a P4 2.6, comes close to the 2.8 in fact.
It all depends on what you use your computer for and wether or not you are prepared to overclock.
If you ARE prepared to overclock, then get the Barton, it kills the competition, but make sure it was made in the first 49 weeks of production or it will be "locked" (cannot overclock the multiplier).
On top of all this Bartons run cooler than P4s, which makes for a more stable PC.
For good benchmarking on CPUs, have a look HERE.
I don't suffer from insanity, I embrace it.

Oh, and if you do go for the Barton, look for the latest Leadtek WinFast socket A motherboard to accompany it. Can't be beaten for price, and it's one of the fastest socket A boards around.

I don't know what bench marking software Hooner is using.
I have both Barton 2500+, XP1700+ running @2.2 and 2.1 Ghz for daily use; A P4 2.6C at 3.31 ghz also daily use.
The P4 C 800 mhz bench marking in every respect is better than XP 3200+.

I would recommend NF7 for AMD, IC7 for P4 800 HT.
I also recommend Barton 2500+ with or without multi-lock, does not matter at all, or P4 2.4 or 2.6C.
Both chipset/motherboard combinations provide excellent OC ability/capability as long as you have decent PSU and memory.
Likely the Barton will run 11X200, and the 2.4C will give you a minimum of 600 mhz OC and over 1,000 mhz if you are lucky.

I use Si-soft Sandra real_cool, and with my Athlon @ 2.09 GHz, it beats the 2.6 benchmark.

What's so difficult to believe real_cool? everyone knows that a 2600 will out-perform a P4 2.6 at stock speeds..............

Hi,
First of all thanks for ur valuable comments/advises.I am going to use it both for development perpurse and gaming and all that .......can overclocking is going to give me unpridictable results for development. purpose?..
if yes, then i will not do overclocking and what are the benchmarks w/o overclocking?
one more thing if i choose to go 4 p4 then HT or non HT.....and if i choose to overclock then should i buy non HT P4....
Thanks

In sisandra the intels ht 3.0 c can beat amd 3.2 ghz in every expect sometimes in large margine so dont listen to hooner, he might be amd biased! My 2.4C HT beats amd 2600+ in Floating point tests and the 2600+ only beats me in drystone and wetstone! FLOATING POINT IS VERY IMPORtANT! ALSO when dual channel enabled intel easily out does amd chips since they dont benefit a great deal from dual channel as much as intel, also Abit' IC-7 also will be comp[atible wit INTELS next cpu (Prescott 90nm)coming sometime soon.
*ALL TESTS WERE DONE IN SISANDRA 2004!

I did reasearch as I had same problem when deciding either AMD or INTEL! So Go with Intel. If you want to overclock go for the 2.4C HT like mine its most overclockable. It can reach (250x4)1000Ghz FSB and in some cases 1300 FSB on stock speeds!

Sorry made a mistake, my cpu also beats the 2600+ in whetsone by Graet margin just like in floating point!

Abhinv, you are missing the point my friend, the Barton core 2600 costs around £65, while the Pentium 4 2.67 HT costs around £105.
£40 for such a SMALL increase in performance?
Couple this with the fact that socket A boards are generally cheaper than P4 boards, and are also usually a LOT more overclock friendly, check out any recent Leadtek WinFast socket A board.

AMD vs INTEL...
the epic war still runs... well my mate owns a AMD Palmino 1800+ and it reaches over 60ºc with a TT Volcano 9 in Prime95 torture test, meanwhile my 2.6C @ 3.120 GHz hits 62ºC max in the same test (or 55ºc max at stock speeds), thats with stock cooling and cheap Unick rubish thermal paste... big diffrence! You work it out... me? both companies are great, but i prefer intel, but have nothing against AMD... not yet!
Things to keep in mind:
* The ASUS P4P800 / Deluxe boards have the best performance, stability, and overclock-ability better then the ABit versions (For INTEL).
* YOU CAN UNLOCK ANY AMD CHIP NO MATTER WHEN IT WAS MADE - LOOK FOR AN AMD UNLOCK GUIDE.
* Intels seem to run cooler then AMD's and logically - the cooler things run, the longer the life. (Usually, or generally)
* The Stock HSF coolers for P4 C's (or P4 + HT) are the best around - DONT REPLACE THEM UNLESS YOUR INVESTING IN WATER COOLING OR BETTER.
* Its worth the extra $$$ for an intel and its HT feature if your using WindozeXP - you can do a bit more at one time then usual.
* Overclocking a P4C - my 2.6C wont go past 240fsb / 3.120 GHz, but from 2.6? thats a good overclock, expect more from a 2.4C
* If your overclocking the whole hog (a long way) you have to buy a proper mobo with the ability to lock the PCI / AGP speeds.
* Dont expect your P4 (or other CPU) to overclock like "the other guys P4" - the batches differ, for example you could read on the net that many have got their 2.6c to reach 3.6 / 1200fsb with stock cooling and running below 40 at idle - mine wont go past 3.120 / 960fsbHOPE THIS HELPS YOU ALL
