im setting up a P3 600 (the 600E, with the 256 cache) on the absolutely horrible ASUS P2B slot 1 board...i know by experience that the whole P2B line is flawed, but they work great if u get them working

a) 100x6 wont work for this cpu. why?

b) the board's manual was printed before the pentium 3 existed, but i read on a third party site that it will work. I have an identical board (same revision too) running the 500 model with the 512 cache, no problems. will i even be able to get the 600E combo to work?

c) other info: board uses i440BX agpset, has Rage AGP vid, a 250W PS, and a test 3gb hdd. every once in awhile, i get a vid out and a good POST, and most of the time it fails POST, gives a long beep and then too quick beeps, and no vid out. its got award 4.51pg bios.

should i just opt to find a better board, or is there some secret multiplier i dont know about?

the options for this board range from 2.0 to 8.0, including the 0.5s..i.e. 2.0, 2.5, 3.0, etc

as for clock speeds...theres too many too list...the min is 66 and the max is 150, but PCI devices dont function with the clock above 100 on this board (stupid i know, dont ask why, its written in the manual itself)

any suggestions?

My guess is that the mobo is having difficulty providing the CPU with the correct voltage.

The first P2s used 2.8V (Klamath core)
The newer P2s used 2.0V (Deschutes core)
The 512KB P3s also used 2.0V (Katmai core)

The newer 256K P3s used 1.65-1.75V (Coppermine core)

You say this is an older P2-based board, so chances are, unless you aquire a proper voltage regulator, you'll have to run an older 512KB pentium III chip.

Like you, I've also found those older P2 boards a pain in the arse with CPU and AGP compatibility. :(

i think street1 misunderstood....it is a slot 1 board with a slot 1 CPU...pentium 3s originally came in the slot 1 form and that's the only kind of intel chip i even bother with

(out of personal anger at intel) i'd bet an athlon slot 1 would work...i hate intel, but its all i have to work with right now

thanks anyway though

i think your motherboard does not support for the "E" version of processor. the "E" means that the L2 cache runs at the same speed as your core speed that is 600Mhz. and without the "E" means that the L2 cache runs at half of your processor speed, but the size of the L2 cache is 512.

I met before that a i440BX board that cant support this type of cpu.

Abit NF7 ver2.0
Athlon XP 2200+ 200Mhz10.5 = 2100Mhz
DDR512 PC2700 333Mhz
Galaxy GeForce FX 5200 270/443 128MB
Windows XP SP2
